WENTZELL – Doris May It is with heavy hearts, full of treasured memories that we announce the peaceful passing of a loved mother, adored grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother on May 20, 2018, formerly of Beach Meadows, in Queens Manor, Liverpool at the age of 100.
Born August 28, 1917 in Eagle Head, Queens County, she was the eldest daughter of the late Lambert Owen (who passed when Doris was 8) and Effie Florence (Weagle) Conrad.
Doris was a lifelong adherent of Emmanuel United Church, Beach Meadows, a member of the Bible study group and a proud recipient of a life membership in the United Church Women. She was a founding member and long time treasurer of the Seaside Seniors. She quilted and bowled with the Seaside Seniors and enjoyed many bus trips to Annapolis Valley and MicMac Mall as well as their outings to Kedji.
Doris treasured her family and many friends, had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed new challenges and was involved in her community. Her family was blessed with a lady who was selfless, honest, generous, caring and, above all, positive in her outlook. She always looked for the good in people. At her 100th birthday party, she thanked the many who shared in her day, sang “You Are My Sunshine” and even had a dance! She was overjoyed and appreciated her party.
Doris was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, crocheting, watching the birds at her feeders and gardening; many still enjoy the flowers she left behind or a slip still growing in their garden.
She touched the lives of many with her kindness, was generous to many charities and for years knit sweater sets for preemies at the IWK. She enjoyed sharing her memories with those who wished to record area history; she had a sharp memory for detail. She always told people how beautiful “our” Beach Meadows beach was and even attended the Easter Sunrise service until the age of 96. Christmas was her favorite season and she started singing carols and songs at “The Manor” once the tree was decorated.
Mom lived a long, wonderful life, personifying grace and kindness, an inspiration to family and friends. She was a golden thread of love spun invisibly through our hearts and lives. She was and always will be a shining star in our hearts.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law; Kathleen and Ronald Webster, Cole Harbour; Frances and John Purdy, West Porters Lake; grandchildren Teresa Purdy (Marti Soosaar), Mineville; Timothy Webster (Kelli Burke), Kanata, ON; Michelle Purdy (Dan Tramble), Cole Harbour; Scott Webster (Diana Papa), Stittsville, ON; great grandchildren Samantha Sherman (Chris Crane), Ian Sherman, Kirstin, Kristofer and Annaliis Soosaar, Evan and Alex Webster, Step great grandchildren, Tyler and Conner Miller; Great great granddaughter Danica Crane. Sister -in-law Wilhelmina Conrad and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Gordon B. (1996); step father William Morreau, brothers Jordan (Marjorie), Kenneth (Jessie), Erlin, Lambert (Gloria), sister Mildred (Francis Mansfield); brother and sister-in-law Edwin (Mildred) Wentzell.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23, 2018 from 7 until 9 p.m. in Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service will be Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in Emmanuel United Church, Beach Meadows. Lay Minister Peter Anthony officiating.
Burial will be in Beach Meadows Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to any charity. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com
She wished to stay in her own home as long as possible and appreciated the support of Queens County Home Support ladies and the untiring support of Julie and Linwood Wentzell.
We also wish to thank our minister Lay Minister Peter Anthony for his many visits and thoughtfulness, Dr. Garry Morash for his outstanding care and just being her “Dear Garry”. A special thank you to the staff at Queens Manor. The love and concern that you showed during Mom’s stay was much appreciated. You always treated Mom as a member of your family and made her feel worthy and loved. To the staff of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, thank you for your support.

I am very sorry for your loss,I will miss Doris, I worked at Queens manor for 37 years as a cook and I can say she was my favourite lady, very kind and always smiling. I would sit by Doris and help her eat her meals as she couldn’t see well, this gave us time to chat, we talked about her love of sauerkraut and mine to, I would say must be my grandmothers and we would laugh, I have great memories of wonderful lady ❤️

Condolence from Sandy Cross on May 21st, 2018 6:33 pm

Doris Wentzell family, we send our condolences to you all. I have known Doris for about thirty years and she was a sweetheart to talk to. But I really got yo know her in the last year since my mother in law has been at the manor. If we visited on a Sunday Doris would be singing hymns. The first of December she started to sing Christmas carols. Her mind was always sharp. Oh how she loved to hear our dog Holly come into the room. She would pet her for awhile and always said as we left “ what a good pretty dog you are. Doris and I would have conversations about people around Beach Meadows and EagleHead. We talked a lot about her cousin Vera Bagley and she remembered us visiting her when she was in Ryan’s Hall in Bridgewater. She will definitely be missed. She was a kind hearted soul who lived life to the fullest. She was so proud have hit the age of 100. And yes she definitely was the life of her party at the Legion. RIP Doris

Condolence from Sandi and Ian Reardon on May 22nd, 2018 5:41 pm

Doris and her late husband, Gordon, showed enormous kindness and humanity to two wandering souls in 1973. My husband, Ian, and I met Doris and Gordon when we were British students hitchhiking across North America. They gave us a bed for a few nights when we landed in Nova Scotia and, much more importantly, a friendship that lasted a lifetime. We loved them both so much. We were heartbroken when Gordon died and our hearts are broken again at the passing of Doris. She was a truly wonderful human being with so many wonderful qualities. The world has lost a beautiful lady. RIP dear Doris.

Condolence from John and sandy Soosaar on May 22nd, 2018 7:15 pm

Sandy and I got to know Doris May or Nanny Wentzell at Marti and Teresa’s annual Christmas party, and it was always a pleasure to talk to her about the old days and her family. It was inspiring to see how her daughter Frances and her grandchildren and great grandchildren clustered around her and the love they had for her. Last year, when she celebrated her 100th birthday was a special event for the entire family. We are proud to have known this kindly lady whose life was truly “well lived.”

To Doris’s Family,

While campaigning, I had the pleasure to meet Doris. During this time she shared with me she would be turning 100 in August. I remember holding her hand and telling her that I hoped I would be elected the MLA so I could present her with a certificate. I waa so proud to come back to visit Doris and present her with that certificate. I so enjoyed my visit with her and photo. Doris was such a beautiful, caring lady and you were all so blessed to have her in your lives. Her smile and twinkle in her eye will remain a memory for me forever. Take comfort in the many memories you have shared together.

I had the pleasure of caring for Doris at Queens General before she went to live at the Manor. She was a true joy! Her infectious smile brightened my day…every day. My co-workers and I often reminisce about the sweet lady who always gave herself a little pat and said “ come on old woman” every time she had to get up and move somewhere. Always a positive outlook and thinking of others. I am smiling now remembering her❤️Thank you for leaving a mark on my heart sweet Doris.

Sorry I found out a date after the funeral, same old thing for me “a day late and a dollar short”. I so enjoyed growing up knowing my Aunt Doris and Uncle Gordon so much. She was like Nanny Roe in so many ways and Dad often spoke of how the two girls helped at home after their Dad passed. But I just cherish all the visits to all my Aunts and Uncles growing up. She loved her flowers and especially the roses and was the one who gave Mom the bug. The last of my Dad’s siblings but the fondest memories and I treasure the thought that they are all together again.
