VEINOT – Dorothy Maxine, 98, of Caledonia, Queens County, passed away peacefully in North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia, on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
Born in Maitland Bridge, Annapolis County, she was a daughter of the late Robie and Pansy (Thompson) Ford.
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Dorothy left this world on December 15, 2020 to go to a better place to reunite with her husband and other relatives and friends who passed before her. Dorothy was an avid bridge player. Being a person who just couldn’t sit and do nothing, she spent many hours sewing knitting and of course quilting, something she took great pride in. If those corners we’re not perfectly square they would be taken out and redone until they met her standards. She was also a wonderful baker and cook. If you entered her kitchen you were not leaving before you ate something, whether it be a full meal, a cookie or a square, or just a piece of her famous bread. She also spent many hours across the road at the nursing home where she helped to feed the patients. A big joke at her 90th birthday celebration was when she said she used to go over and feed the old people, most of whom were younger than she was. Thus it is only fitting that Dorothy took her last breath in the nursing home. Tremendous thanks goes out to the wonderful staff of the North Queens nursing home who are so good to her and helped her in her journey home. Also, tremendous thanks to all the wonderful ccas from Queens County home care who made it possible for Dorothy to remain in her home as long as she could. You all made her life that much better.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Judy Frail of Caledonia; sons Donald of Halifax, NS; and Doug of Caledonia. Grandchildren Nathaniel, Emily, Rebecca, Jordyn, Hayley, Chris and Angela; great-grandchildren Aubrey, Abigail, Cohen, Logan, Brian, Alaura, Peyton and Hayden.
Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Oran, her sister Isabelle Lohnes; brothers Oscar, Randall, Lawrence and Kendall.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date. No flowers by request, donations may be made to North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia, or to Westfield Community Hall. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.chandlersfuneral.com

To Dorothy’s Family,
Many of stops I made with my grandmother, Pauline to Oran and Dorothy’s house which always begin with a fresh baked item from that day. Dorothy was such a gentle, kind lady whose smile could certainly brighten a dark day. A beautiful lady inside and out.
I hope your many precious memories give you strength and comfort in the days ahead. Keep them close to your heart.
My sincere condolences,
Mary and Rod Keirstead
Judy and Family, we were so sorry to hear of Dorothy’s passing. To us she was pretty much a legend! A visit to her kitchen always involved something delicious to eat and something interesting to talk about. Not too many years ago I spoke with her about falls prevention, a subject she told me she didn’t worry much about as she tossed a pretty hefty log into the wood stove. North Queens will miss her very much.
Marion Seamone

We were saddened to learn of Dorothy’s passing. Shortly after our first daughter was born, we moved in part of Clint and Flora Dukeshire’s home. Flora made me a quilt top and her friends came to help quilt it. Dorothy always came and was very friendly and smiling. I learned to quilt with them. They were all great quilters and it was my pleasure to be with Dorothy and the other ladies. I still enjoy Quilting thanks to them.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all her family. She will be missed. She was such a lovely lady and a treasured friend to all who knew her.

Dear Judy, Donald & Doug,
Our sincere condolence to all of you. When I read Dorothy’s obituary a flood of wonderful memories came to mind from the three summers I (Paul) spent on the farm with Dorothy and Oran. Would deliver the milk and cream with her to the Co-op in Caledonia and would help out planting the garden- don’t know how much of a help I was but she would make me feel that I was doing my part. There are many other wonderful memories that I have because of Dorothy and these I will cherish, and I know that you all have great memories as well. Got to visit her a couple of years ago while she was still in her home – and her home was always welcoming. She was a hard worker both on the farm and in her community and she will be missed not only by her family but her community.

Dear Judy, Donnie,Doug, and families:
Sorry to learn that your dear Mom, and our dear cousin Dorothy has passed on. So many memories remain with us,
we would exchange Murray,s jelly, and my (Glen,s) hermit cookies for her cinnamon rolls and jelly filled cookies. Her smile was so beautiful, and her welcome was so uplifting. We enjoyed so much taking her to the weekly card parties ,and particularly more recently playing 45,s at her house with Lorne , Murray, and myself, then having a lovely lunch and tea
following. She was a great lady, and will be sadly missed. May dear. memories remain always with you.
With our sincere condolence.

Judy, Donnie, Doug: Dorothy was a remarkable soul. Loving, caring and genuine. Always found a reason to smile and lived life as a person who understood how worthwhile life truly is. Dorothy was a close neighbour (when my sister and I were youngsters) and in many ways a 2nd Mother. I can remember the kitchen smells, baking bread and her tasty molasses cookies. And her great hugs. There was a twinkle in her eyes as ‘we’ conspired to mix colouring in the margarine so Oran wouldn’t know. ‘I can’t believe that’s not butter’ wouldn’t have been his choice and a concern ‘we’ may have gotten away with…who knew? She appreciated the importance of family better than most can imagine and will always be in our hearts.

Your Mom has always had a special.place in my heart. It started when Betty brought my brother and I over to your home to catch chicken pox when we were just youngsters and continued with evenings in that heavenly smelling kitchen through the teenage years. Later years it was always a treat to bring Dot to visit Mom and listen to.stories of old Caledonia , cooking recipes and quilting patterns. I am glad she was not ill long and was able to be amongst her friends during this past fall at the Queen’s Nursing Home. She was a treasure.

So sorry to hear of your Mother’s passing
She was a great person, she enjoyed quilting so much,
and made such beautiful quilts, I always enjoyed seeing
the quilts she made and put in the exhibition, I remember
one year she put a cake in the exhibition to be judged and
the Judge left her a note that they did not accept cakes mixes,
Dorothy was a bit upset and sent a note to the Judge, I
always remember that, she has had a good long life, which
you can be very thankful, you will miss her but you will have the memories
Take Care and God Bless

Your Mom was a gem. I had only seen her a couple of times but Robert boarded with she and Oran one winter, many years ago, when he worked at the Co-op in Caledonia. He thought the world of her and spoke of her often. Sending sincere condolences at this very sad and difficult time.
Wendy Grant
Dorothy and I usually met in the stores of Caledonia where we chatted about what she was working on at that moment. She was an artist with a needle and thread and I always regret that I didn’t win one of the quilts she gave to charity to raise money through ticket sales. Such a lovely lady. Condolences to the family.
