In Memorial

Turner, Harland Ross,  of Liverpool.  We are saddened to announce his passing on Saturday, January 17th, 2015, after a very short but courageous battle with cancer, at Queens General Hospital in Liverpool, where he was surrounded by family and friends 24/7.

Harland was born in Liverpool, the youngest son of Emelie and the late Lester Turner.

Upon his fathers death, he returned home to assume the family business and care for his Mom, which he did faithfully up to the day prior to his passing. He also began his own successful towing company. To those who knew Harland he had a heart as big as all outdoors and was a lover of animals. He was always there to lend a helping hand when needed, never saying no to anyone. His beautiful mischievous grin could light up any room and his sense of humor brought laughter to many.

In his younger years, he was a dedicated athletic and an accomplished equestrian. He continued to play basketball for enjoyment with a men’s group upon his return home. A country boy at heart, he was happiest at his little cabin that he built himself in Chelsea and clearing his land.

He is survived by his mom, Emelie Turner of Ridgewood Retirement home, Bridgewater, his older brother Kevin (Candy) of Vancouver and his niece Chennyne Lamrock of Eagle Head (Acadia University) whom he adored.

He was predeceased by his father Lester and his brother Quentin.

A graveside service will be held at a later date as per his request. Memorial donations  may be made to The Lodge That Gives, 5826 South Street, Halifax, NS B3H-1S6. At this time we gratefully acknowledge the following: All departments of Queens General Hospital, the many calls and visits received. Special mention to Billy Tutty who spent so much time with him while he was home for Christmas holidays. We especially wish to thank all the nursing staff on 2nd floor who took such good care of Harland.  And to all the physicians who were involved. Special thanks going to Dr. Tim Woodford for your care, compassion and dedication. To Susan Fisher, we could not have done it without you – we love you, and to the staff of Ridgewood for the care and compassion shown to his mom during this very difficult time. We also wish to say thank you to the nurses at both Queens and Ridgewood for the care and compassion shown to us as well, his family. May God bless you all. Condolence from Debbie Godfrey on January 24th, 2015 2:52 am

Harland and I were friends, since grade 9,and his loud plaid pants, that he wore-despite ridicule- because he respected his mama- and she wanted her boys to wear them- Harland had a quirky sense of humor, always a smile, and a twinkle in his eye! He loved shopping at Frenchy’s,and we’d talk there as long as we could! When I went to see him in the hospital,he grumbled to the nurse he didn’t need company- told him to smarten up-he was lucky to have a cutie like me to visit! lo I will miss you,old friend My condolences to the family…:(

Condolence from Nancy Milford on January 24th, 2015 9:00 am

I have just learned of Harland’s death, and am so very sad. We travelled in quite a little pack, back in the day and I desperately wanted to live on Waterloo Street so I could be closer to my friends. And I MADE my parents rent a cottage at Greenfield in the summer, so I could be with my Waterloo St friends even more – days at “the barn” with the gang form some of my fondest childhood memories. Harland is a huge part of all those memories. Sending along my most sincere condolences to you all as you struggle through this very difficult time.

Dear Emelie, Kevin and family. I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Harland’s passing.
There’s not many words a person can say during times like these to bring us comfort; however, I do know from my own journey, that God is our Refuge and our Strength in times like these. Psalm 46:1.
I will continue to hold you all in prayer as you walk through this difficult time in your lives.
Praying the Lord’s peace and His comfort over each of you today; and, in the days to come.

Condolence from Billy Tutty on January 25th, 2015 11:25 pm

Harland was a very good friend and we had many a good time together. He was a typical Turner with bit of a gruff exterior but inside this over sized heart. In the summers that I managed to get back for visits, Huey Morrison and I would always look forward to catching up with Harland in Greenfield……tearing up the lake. I will certainly miss his endless sarcastic sense of humor which we would both trade back and forth…….busting many a laugh. And guaranteed the more he drank the even more fun he would become. One of our finest of adventures was when Harland and I vacationed at Hedonism lll in Jamaica for two weeks……talk about a couple of heathens. Harland was one of my best friends and always will be. Emelie and Kevin my heart is with you.

Billy Tutty

Condolence from Jan Pottie on January 26th, 2015 12:24 am

Some things are just too hard. Last time I saw Harland was in the fall when he towed my car, a ’92 Honda that I only trusted to him. Which he knew. He had a very bad cough and it was cold and rainy but he dragged himself out to Summerville. He pulled on his rubber pants, grabbed the chains and gruffly complained the whole time–Harlan style. As he got back in the cab of his big red tow truck and was ready to pull away I said, “you’re a good boy Harland.” He turned and flashed that brilliant and mischievous smile and said, “I know”. I ran for my camera and just caught the truck as it passed by an opening in the trees. I will always cherish the picture I took that day and the memory of the smile I earned. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs Turner, Kevin, Candy and Chennyne. Harland was a very good boy and I will miss him.

To the Turner family,

May you know other’s are thinking of you at this difficult time.

We would always know when Harland was up on the hill in Chelsea, the power saw or lawn mower was always going. He was a man that worked continually.
He cared deeply for his mom and when she became ill, the sounds on the hill were silent for some time now. Time changes so much.

Warmest thought’s to you all.

Condolence from Steve Graham aka SHORTY on February 4th, 2015 5:45 pm

This one was a shock to read. It has been a very long time since I saw Harland but as stated here when I last saw him he always had a huge smile and was full of the devil. One of the best memories I have of Harland was in high school when he came to school with a permed afro. He was so proud of his new found style, Mike West and I, being two guys with naturally curly fuzzy hair found great humor in Harland’s new disco style.

Emilie / Kevin please accept my deepest sympathies.
