Ruth Murray Thorburne

Thorburne-Ruth Murray(Colp) 86, of Charleston, Queens County, formerly of Liverpool, passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary on November 22, 2022 with her loving family by her side.
Born in Liverpool, Mom was the eldest daughter of the late Gerald and Lillian(Frausel)Colp of Port Mouton.
Growing up in Port Mouton, Mom and her brother Clare delivered milk to the cottage guests on Carter’s and Wobamkek Beaches. She was housekeeper in her younger teen years and worked in the telephone office. Mom met Dad and moved to Liverpool where they started their family. They moved back to Port Mouton shortly after where they went on to raise their family of eight children. The house was always full of kids! They welcomed our friends and cousins too! Some still call them their second Mom & Dad! Mom would meet up with a few friends and their children on summer days and we would walk down and spend the day playing at Carters Beach. As a family, some evenings were spent down on the “shore” cooking pots of periwinkles on an open fire! Waking on a weekend morning and finding Mom packing a banana box with sandwiches, sweets and drinks we knew we were heading out for an adventure!!! A lot of times we stopped to pick up Nanny Grace and we would stop and picnic at a park or just a nice grassy spot by the roadside! Some of our happiest memories were our car rides!! We spent many fun years camping at Ponhook. After us kids flew the coop, Mom started working as a spare bartender at Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion in Liverpool. She loved talking with the Veterans and other patrons and went on to fulltime bartender where she worked alongside Dad on many Friday & Saturday nights, usually getting a least one dance in to unwind before closing up and heading home!
Mom loved her family more than anything else in the world and would be the first to ask when the next get together would be! Our annual family picnics, birthday parties, holidays, any excuse to have the children, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gathered together brought her much happiness! We were all her pride and joy and we knew her love for us was deep as was ours for her!!
Mom enjoyed feeding and watching birds and animals, reading, watching game shows and wrestling, radio bingo, scratch and pull tickets(and the “girls on the hill”), and beating anyone who dared to play a game of cribbage with her, she rarely lost!!
Surviving are her children Mary Emily of Liverpool; Michael (Marilyn) of Beech Hill; Lillian Thorburne (James Williams) of Carter’s Beach; Inez (Donald) Shupe of Charleston; Cynthia Thorburne (Clinton Fisher) of Hunts Point; Wanda Himmelman (Peter Howard) of Sandy Cove; Andrew (Christina) of East Berlin and Cheryl Thorburne of Liverpool, Grandchildren Adrienne “Sook” (Rory); Justin (Lisa); Ronnie, Colin (Kim), Kyle (Kayla), Megan, Christopher (Tiffany), Jacob, Kaitlin (Braden), Ryan, Michael, Leah, Austin, Dennis (Candace) and Jessi. Great grandchildren Bjorn, Nola, Oliver, Sawyer, Sophie, Haelyn, Dominic, Paige and Payton. Her sister Celia Duchesne, Lower Sackville , sisters-in-law Janet Colp, Port Mouton, Mary Whynot, Liverpool, Brother-in-law David(Norma) Thorburne, London, On. and her dear Aunt Marie Woodworth, Shoreham Village, Chester and many neices and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her husband Murray, her daughter Angela Ruth; grandson Matthew Allen; brothers Clare and Maynard, sisters Muriel, Inez and Sharon.
One of Moms favorite memories was the smell of the sea , now Mom will make her final journey to her beloved Port Mouton where there is salt in the air and lay to rest with Dad who was the love of her life for 68 years. Our hearts are heavy and we miss you dearly but we know you are home and at peace. Love you forever Mom
