Spicer, David Irving, age 72, of Port Mouton, Queens County, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18th, 2023, in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, with his loving wife by his side after a brief illness.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Irvine and Agnes (McIntyre) Spicer.

David’s life was always about his family. He was a loving husband, Dad and a proud Grampie. David loved spending time with his girls, especially at Christmas time. His family was his pride and joy.

Growing up a military brat, David learned firsthand that you get out of life what you put into it. He carried a strong work ethic in everything he did. In his younger days, he worked on a friends farm in Apple River, as a pin setter at his local bowling alley and as a cook at the Wayfair Restaurant in Trenton, before taking up a career in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a medic. David had numerous posting across Canada and foreign postings in Lahr, Germany with UN Tours in Cyprus and Iran. He also spent time working the 1967 Olympics in Montreal as part of the medic team. He served his country well and wore his uniform with pride for over 37 years, making many lifelong friends along the way. David was well respected by his soldiers. He had that special combination of a great sense of humor while still being professional and fair. He showed care and concern for those with whom he served and was endlessly present to listen and provide help when needed. He always remained humble and never forgot where he came from.

Retiring as a Warrant Officers physician’s assistant in 2009, he and Janet moved to Port Mouton, where he enjoyed the beautiful ocean views and sitting on the deck in the early mornings with his many forest animals. His passions were diverse, David enjoyed boating on the Petawawa River, camping, watching his beloved Toronto Blue Jays and Tiger Woods, hunting, scuba diving, playing darts and gardening with his buddy, Junior. David was a member of the Port Mouton United Baptist Church, the West Queens Recreation Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #038 Liverpool. David lived life to the fullest and would recently often say that he wouldn’t change a thing that happened during his lifetime. He will always be remembered for being a fun-loving kind soul, having a big smile and a generous laugh. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

David is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Janet; daughters, Melanie, Angie (Julien); grandchildren, Destiny (Noah) and Everly; sister, Gwen Pope.

Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his brother, Gary.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. At David’s request there will be no funeral service. Donations may be made to the Queens County V.O.N. or to a charity of your choice. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.chandlersfuneral.com

The family would like to send a special thank you to the nurses at the Queens County V.O.N., the staff at Queens General Hospital, Dr. Andrew Blackadar for their special care and compassion and a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Gary Morash, for giving us an five extra years to spend with David.

To Dave’s Family

I want to take this moment to extend my deepest sympathy to Dave’s family. I first met Dave in 1975. We were attending an Airevac course at Trenton Ontario. I believe at the time he was posted in Summerside. We became really could friends while on course and always kept in touch but never served together again until early 1990s at Petawawa Ontario. He was an outstanding soldier and was always there to help his fellow soldiers. He would be seen at many sporting activities providing medical support. Gone but not forgotten. Condolences to Janet, Melanie, Angie, family and sister. When reading Dave’s obituary we were struck on how it truly captured his life. The words were exact and the pictures showed the man. It is how we remembered him – definitely a family man, loved his family, was a good friend and served his country proudly. Although we did not see Dave often, we just picked up our conversations as if we had never left. The news of his passing has truly saddened us. He will be missed.
