SELIG – Verda Z. 1920 – 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom, Nanny, Sister, Aunt and Friend on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.
Born in Chelsea, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Hazen and Hazel (Herman) Henley and step-mother, Carrie Henley.
Verda was a long-time resident of South Brookfield, Queens County, she was a member of the United Baptist Church and lifelong member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Verda was a woman of many passions including cooking, music and various crafts. For the past year and a half, she was cared for by C. Renate Bennett, Nurse Practitioner, and the wonderful staff at the North Queens Nursing Home in Caledonia. These extraordinarily kind people became part of her extended family, especially during the past several months of COVID isolation, and she loved them all dearly.
Verda is survived by her daughters Judi (Bill) Wamboldt, Carolyn McBride and Cheryl Selig; sisters Una Aulenback and Joan (Gerry) LeMoal; grandsons Chris McBride (Kim Myers), Darren Wamboldt (Kelly Hatt), Shane Wamboldt (Suzanne); great grandchildren Hayden, Lauren, Lindsey, Jake, Ruby, Beth, and honorary great grandchildren, Zoe and Porter, who all loved their “Jelly Bean Nanny”. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Verda was predeceased by her husband John, her sisters Ida, Beverly and Elsie and her sons-in-law Douglas McBride and Richard Bavelaar.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool N.S. A service to celebrate her full and wonderful life will be held Monday, August 24, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in South Brookfield United Baptist Church, South Brookfield. Reverend Vic Adams officiating. Burial will take place in South Brookfield Community Cemetery, South Brookfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Brookfield United Baptist Church, the North Queens Nursing Home Recreation Department, the North Queens Fire Association or any charity of choice.
All attending this service are required to bring a mask, practice social distancing and provide for contact tracing at the door. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com

Our noon, our night, our talk, our song;

Condolence from Kim Masland, MLA on August 21st, 2020 12:08 pm

To Verda’s Family,

Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for your loss. My heart is breaking for each of you as I know how much you loved beautiful Verda. I hope the many memories you hold so closely to your heart give you some comfort. How blessed you are that you were able to call her Mom and Jelly Bean Nanny. She loved her family deeply and was so proud. When I would mention her family in conversation, she didn’t need to say a word, her smile showed her love, admiration and pride.

I will always be thankful for Verda’s friendship and support from the first day I sat at her kitchen table and shared with her I was running to be MLA, to the last time she held my hand. It was powerful when she held your hand and it always made you feel as everything was going to be ok. She told me once, she was my biggest fan and I quickly responded, I am also yours Verda. Beautiful Verda may now be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

May your heart and soul find peace and comfort during this difficult time of loss. Hug each other a little tighter, look after each other – that is what Verda would want.

I am here for you,

My condolences

Dear Cheryl and Family:

We will be forever grateful to Verda, even though we never had the privilege of meeting her, for passing on her strength, love and enduring character in her daughters. If not for her, our world would have been smaller, and somewhat colder. But Verda’s light must have been bright as we saw it in her family and in the way our Richard fondly spoke of her.

For now, we praise our God for giving us Verda for as long as He did, and look forward to gathering when we all will be there.

Till then, big hugs,
Laura Bavelaar, Jeff Majik, Kathleen and Sophia Anderson-McBurney

Condolence from Paulette Demmons on August 25th, 2020 12:16 pm

To Verda’s family,

While it may have been a long time ago, I remember so clearly the many, many hours I spent with Calli at her home. Verda and Johnny were always warm and welcoming. What a perfect video to refresh memories! I can see her in my mind’s eye standing in her apron baking in exactly the same spot as the photo. Breakfasts were extra special because she made the very best cocoa hot chocolate that I have ever tasted. She gave a lot of love and received a lot of love to make her long life a treasure in so many ways.
Thinking of you,
Paulette
