ROWTER – Marie Earnestine, 97, of Ryan Hall, Bridgewater, formerly of Caledonia and Maitland Bridge, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021.
Marie was born to the late Richard and Grace (Crouse) Hawkes in Devonshire, Queens County. She was one of thirteen children.
Marie married Miledge Rowter in 1947 and they lived in Maitland Bridge for 51 years until Miledge’s passing in 1998. Marie then relocated to Caledonia where she resided for the next twenty years and in 2017 moved to Bridgewater. However, Maitland Bridge always remained home.
Marie was a very energetic person. She loved to be “on the go” and enjoyed attending community events. Week was not complete without a Monday night card game, Wednesday night bingo and, occasionally a Saturday night community supper. Mom and Dad always welcomed visitors into their home. Mom was an excellent cook and took pleasure in preparing a meal or lunch for their company. She enjoyed knitting and reading books of local interest. Mom was an avid scrapbooker long before it became popular. We have many scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings and articles of local interest that Mom saved over the years. She was a member of St. Jerome’s Catholic Church and always enjoyed baking for and attending their strawberry suppers.
Marie is survived by her daughters Pauline Vincent and Grace (Laurie) Fletcher, both of Truro, NS. Her son Greg (Karen) of Blockhouse. Her grandchildren Angela (Ross) Roulston, Corry (Hektor) Kaczuga and Sally (Eric) Manley. Her great grandchildren Kyle, Tyler, Samuel and Lola. Her sisters Irene Murray of Wilmington, MA. and Evelyna (Gerald) MacQuarrie of Pleasant River. Her brothers Vernon (Joyce) of Hunt’s Point, Robert (Mildred) of Caledonia, Frederick (Ruth) of Harmony.
Besides her parents and her husband Miledge, Marie was predeceased by her grandson Geoffery Fletcher, sisters Eleanor Donnellan and Elizabeth Weagle and her brothers Ray, Herman, Gerald, Paul and Arthur as well as her son in law Velmer “Red” Vincent.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service will be held Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Burial at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery, Maitland Bridge. No flowers by request, donations may be made to Maplewood Cemetery; c/o Roderick Ford, Maitland Bridge. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.

It was with a heavy heart I read the obituary of your mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sibling, friend. Marie was a regular attendee at St. Jerome’s every weekend when she was still mobile enough to be there. I admired her spunk and the occasional chastisement when she didn’t agree with me! Lots of memories of stopping by “Grammie Rowter’s” house as kids while out riding our bikes and then as adults, receiving all the advice and local news that you didn’t know you needed to hear while enjoying a cup of tea and sweets around the table. She was sharp as a tack, had style for days, and cared for her family and community greatly. Sending peaceful thoughts to all of you.
