It was my distinct pleasure to have met and interviewed Mrs. Pottie in the course of research for my book, Destination White Point. Her eyes sparkled as she related some of the favourite memories from her past. It was always a delight to find her amongst the faithful early morning swimmers at White Point Beach Lodge. In spite of obvious health challenges, she always had a positive comment, never a complaint; she was as smart and positive as she was pretty.

We were privileged to have been part of the ‘White Point Swim Club’ during a few of the years that Eloise swam there. She was a wonderful lady, always with sparkling eyes and a quick wit to match.
We were lucky enough to have been at White Point on the morning that she celebrated her 90th birthday, and her zest for life gave her an additional six years. She will be missed.

I looked forward to seeing Eloise every morning when she arrived at White Point. I think all the staff felt the same way. She always stopped by the desk for a chat. She was known as our bunny lady. She would find stuffed bunnies at Frenchys , take them home and clean them up and bring them in to us. We would display them around the resort and they were a big hit to all our guests. Some guests even went home with them. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.

I passed many a morning chatting with Eloise and enjoying her cheery (and mischievous) way. So many times I heard stories about her work with Howard Elliot and being a member of the Innkeepers guild and how a certain former White Point chef considered a salad to be a piece of lettuce and one tomato wedge. But my most fun with Eloise was when she would bring me to her car after a morning swim and open her trunk. She was so excited to see my smile as she presented me with a stuffed rabbit she (claimed to) had found at Frenchy’s. She assured me it had been laundered and I assured her we could use the rabbits for the visiting children and appreciated so much her finding and bringing them. Almost daily, another rabbit was added to the collection – many more than we could possibly use but they made us both smile. She was a very special lady who I will always remember fondly. She definitely added to what made my White Point days Great!

The last few days my mind has gone to Aunt Eloise. And to you my cousins. My memories go way back to childhood when we would have lovely summer visits – then jump to more recent times of reunion. I’m so glad for these conversations as adults…connecting the dots. I came away so profoundly blessed. Now when I look at the pictures of Eloise, Mom, Jean and Jamie it is so much more complete. I’m glad for Eloise’s life and thank you Jan for your special care in those visits. My love to all of you.
