Oickle;

OICKLE – John David, 77, of Milton, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Ryan Hall, Bridgewater on Thursday, April 23rd, 2015 in the arms of his loving wife and children.
Born in Halifax, he was the adopted son of the late Harold and Blanche (Dagley) Oickle.
John was a former Canada Manpower employee in Liverpool having worked with the department for over 33 years. In his retirement, he worked as a chauffeur for the former Bowater Mersey Paper Company in Brooklyn. In his early years, he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball and hockey and coaching hockey. He was an avid golfer until the end. Nothing made John’s face light up as much as when he spoke of his love for his family. A fierce competitor on the floor, the field, the ice and with his disease. Never a quitter and he instilled that in his children.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Lillian (Roy), his daughter Karen (Clayton) Smith of Brooklyn, his son David (Natalie) of Milton, his grandchildren Jennifer Smith (Ryan Neilson) and Darren Smith, Keegan and Norah Oickle, his sister Grace Chaban of Brantford, ON, and his brother John (Karen) Burchell of Brule, NS.
He was predeceased by his brother George.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool where a visitation will take place on Sunday, May 3rd, 2015 from 2 until 4 p.m.. A private family graveside will be held at a later time. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of Nova Scotia. Condolence from Duncan & Goretti Mac Isaac on April 25th, 2015 6:44 pm

To John’s family;

A true gentleman has left our presence here on Earth to receive his just reward. Nothing made John’s face light up as much as when he spoke of his love for his family. A fierce competitor on the floor, the field, the ice and with his disease. Never a quitter and he instilled that in his children. We will miss you John; but you will live on in the goodness you spread in those you touched.

Take care of each other.

Condolence from Jeff Miller on April 26th, 2015 8:29 pm

Dear Lil, Karen, David and Family,

I always enjoyed my golf with John after schools as we relived our times playing sports but what stood out most was his love for all of you and his determination in spite of his illness to do the unthinkable!! It was no great accomplishment to beat me at golf but even with him fighting Parkinson’s he taught me to never give up. When he told me the story of sky diving it affirmed all I thought I knew about John. He was not a quitter and he had a great sense of humour! Although I was sad to hear of John’s passing, I had to chuckle as I knew he would want us to remember him that way! My thoughts are with you all!! Jeff

Going through life we can have many faces depending on our circumstances. For me, John’s face was one of smiles and laughter and whenever I was around him my face became like his. John liked his sports but he did that to be around people because he really loved people. He loved to tease and be teased and we certainty did plenty of that during our many hours together on the golf course. John is in a better place now and I’m confident he has his smiling,laughing face back. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Condolence from Lisa & Greg Killam on April 27th, 2015 8:45 pm

I would often meet your dad biking around Milton and he would always smile and wave to me. When the helmet law came in the late 90s I passed him and he was scowling. I stopped and asked if he was okay. He said, “This damn helmet law, takes all the fun out of it…I liked the wind blowing through my hair”…and then he winked at me. He was such a nice man who had such an infectious energy. I was sad to hear that he had a physical illness because he was an athlete who never let age slow him down. When I heard that he went skydiving, I thought how special and brave he was. Nobody will replace him, but wow, what memories you will all have of this amazing, inspirational man. Our thoughts are with you.

Lil, Karen, Dave and Families
With so much sadness, we just learned of John’s passing. We know that the past several years have been especially difficult for John and all of you. For so many years we enjoyed his great friendship and wit. You will all have your special memories of John. Some of them for us are sunshine days on Summerville Beach, f
steamed clams, the awful-awful milk shakes he loved, kubba kubba, and the green bunkin, and a handsome best man. You always made us feel like family, and we love you for that.
We are out of the country now and will miss the visitation on Sunday – please forgive us. Will call you Lil when we get home.
We have lost a special man.
Pattie and David

Condolence from Louise Kempton McCormick on April 28th, 2015 4:06 pm

Dear Lillian, Karen and David,

I was saddened to learn about your husband and father…a man I always knew as “Johnny Oickle.” I grew up 2 doors from Johnny and Blanche and often waited, somewhat patiently , on the back steps of their house while
Johnny played basketball, hoping he would give me a turn at dunking the ball in the hoop. He always did but rarely was I successful. When I was a teenager, we moved to Liverpool and I felt so fortunate to be asked to babysit Karen while you lived on Waterloo Street and I lived on Barss Street. I remember how happy I was taking care of Karen one summer while her parents worked. Johnny was such a proud dad. I have lived in Calgary for 40 years so was not aware that he had been affected by that insidious disease called Parkinson’s. What an insult to such an athletic man! Now he is pain-free and I’m confident he is swinging a bat or golf club and playing hockey and basketball. While viewing the photos, I was thinking that you have a lot of happy memories to help you get through this difficult time. With sincere sympathy, Louise Kempton McCormick

Condolence from Peter Drage on April 29th, 2015 12:43 pm

Dear Lillian, David, Natalie, Keegan and Norah;

I am very sad and very sorry about John’s passing. The last time I saw
this special Soul we were talking at his bedside in Q.G.H. He was talking
at the end of our visit about his family but especially about Keegan and Norah.

Upon leaving his room, I turned to say good-bye and saw this very proud man
sitting in his chair with photos of Keegan and Norah in his lap.
I wasn’t able to voice a good-bye.

God Bless my kind and thoughtful former neighbours.

Peter Drage

Dearest family.

Being as close as you can be without being blood. I love you all and was saddened by the news of John but I was sadly happy for him at the same time to be at rest and not in pain anymore. He was like a second father to me and a true gentlemen. He will live long in all those who he had contact with. Through his sports life and coaching days and just his kindness for all. RIP my friend we will see you again. Thoughts are with you all and I wish I was closer to be there with you.

Condolence from Pam Miles on May 2nd, 2015 12:44 am

Dear Lil
Being neighbors on Waterloo Street, John and I became friends as we walked most days. He really became a buddy who I could tell anything to and he to me. When he was in pain, he would hide it from most, but not to me. I was always glad to see him in the arena where he could be a jokester and forget the tough times ahead. I know you and your family have been through a lot, but I must tell you; he loved his family above all and I wish you all the best as he would. RIP my buddy!!

Dear Lil, Dave and Karen and family,
It is so hard to lose a family member regardless of terrible illnesses that are there. John always could make me laugh and these past years cry for the illness that he had, that sometimes made you forget the good years. Family that he loved and loved him back dearly, nothing beats it, enjoy your good memories as I know there were many. Lil, love you as you know. Diane and Donald
