Wendell Eugene Whynott

d. November 3, 2025

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Wendell Eugene Whynott, who transitioned peacefully on November 3, 2025, surrounded by his family who could not have loved him more.

Wendell sometimes said, “I don’t have a story." Little did he know, he had a most beautiful story.

Wendell had his own style: strong, steady, jovial, and curious. He asked questions because he wanted to know about you, about your family, your kids...what they were doing. He was genuinely interested. He liked to listen and share a laugh. His friendly, genuine nature made it easy for people to share.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Wendell grew up with loving parents, Elmer and Joyce Whynott, who continue to love and adore him to this day. Also for 60 years, he shared admiration, laughter, and respect with his younger brother Blaine (deceased),(Dale). He cherished special relationships with his grandparents Mary & Roy Slaunwhite, Agnes & Harold Whynott (all deceased), and his parents-in-law, John & Elsie Dauphinee (deceased). He was also so fortunate to have 20 years with his great-grandfather Michael Notarangelo (deceased). Wendell’s extended family: in-laws, Wendy (Curtis), Barry (Donna); Uncle Doug (Diane), several great-aunts & uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, brought him great joy throughout his life.

At the age of 15, Wendell fell in love with Karen Dauphinee, the girl who would be by his side for the rest of his life. Even while he studied at Acadia University in Wolfville to become a teacher and Karen went to study nursing at the VG Hospital in Halifax, their bond never wavered. They were later married in Wolfville and shared 60 wonderful years together, 55 married.

Wendell and Karen were blessed with two children, Tasha (Rob Tyrrell) and Ryan, who loved and admired their father deeply and learned from his quiet integrity, strength, and humour. He was affectionately known as Papa and Grampie to his grandchildren, Tyson, Tanner, and Emmie (Tyrrell), each of whom held a special and unique place in his heart. Some of his happiest moments were spent laughing with them while on walking adventures, swimming, and playing cards together.

Wendell loved life and found joy in simple things: writing in his journal, meditation and yoga, yard work, walking, swimming, and spending time in nature at the family cottage. Most mornings he checked the weather and the wind to plan the best place for their daily walks.

Sports were a big part of Wendell’s life. A talented baseball and hockey player, he later found his true calling as a coach and mentor. Through the Liverpool Baseball Club, he inspired countless young people to do their best, on and off the field. He once cancelled a weekend practice because he and Karen were going to a dance. When a young player showed up at the house early the next morning, Wendell reminded him the practice had been cancelled. Seeing his disappointment, Wendell got ready quickly and practiced with him anyway. That moment sums up who he was; selfless, dedicated, and always there for others.

For 33 years, Wendell taught Grade 6 at Mill Village School and J.C. Wickwire Academy, where he was loved and respected by students, parents, and colleagues alike. He brought warmth, humour, and calm to the classroom and left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

He and Karen shared many wonderful adventures together, including winter trips to Barbados to celebrate their birthdays. Wendell never wanted to rent beach chairs so they had many daily beach walks and enjoyed blissful hours of swimming until sunset. Cooking meals together in their apartment, and of course...the dancing, were also highlights.

Wendell was fulfilled taking care of and spending time with his family. He radiated positivity and joy, and even made doing the dishes fun. He lived life to the fullest and loved dancing. His number one song request was “End of the Line” by The Traveling Wilburys.

We will love you forever, look for signs from you everywhere, and cherish all the beautiful moments we shared. We will be playing your song, and singing with joy, laughter, and tears.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Asha Dawson, Dr. MacKinnon, Dr. Blackadar, Dr. McMullin, each of the VON nurses who came to our home, and the wonderful nurses, and CCAs at Queens General Hospital for their care, kindness, and compassion.

As per Wendell’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider performing an unexpected act of kindness in Wendell’s name.

Donations can be made to the VON Queens County Branch and the Queens General Hospital Foundation.

Wendell would want us each to slow down, be present in this fast-paced world and be a good listener.

Finally, in Wendell’s honour... play your favourite song, sing loud, laugh often, and dance with joy.

"I loved Papa's personality." - Tanner Reese Notarangelo Tyrrell
