Richard “Dickie” Smith, 79, peacefully passed away on February 3rd, 2024, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, surrounded by family.
Born in Liverpool, Richard was the son of Everett “Archie” and Una (Conrad) Smith.
After high school Richard earned his pilot wings in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following his discharge, he worked briefly at Teleglobe Canada Earth Station before a long career at Bowater Mersey Paper Company. While a dedicated worker, Richard’s true passion lay on the water, where he became well-known in fishing and boating circles, frequenting Brooklyn Marina and enjoying his boat.
Richard is survived by sons Allan (Ann) of Brooklyn, NS, and Kevin of Milton, ON, along with brother Merrill (Janice) of Bridgewater and granddaughters Staci and Sonia.
Predeceased by his wife, Joan (Freeman) Smith, and brother George.
As per Richard’s wishes cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, and there will be no service. The family expresses gratitude to the compassionate South Shore Regional Hospital ICU staff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, Queens General Hospital Foundation, South Shore Health Services Foundation or the charity of choice.
