RAWDING – Herman V., 98, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully with his children by his side in Queens General Hospital on Monday, April 25, 2022 after a life well lived.
Herman was born in Pretty Mary Lake, Queens County, the son of the late Sheldon and Grace (Smith) Rawding.
Herman joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1941 as part of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and proudly served his country during World War II from 1941- 1945 as a member of the Saskatoon Light Infantry. He returned home to Nova Scotia as a decorated soldier where he met his wife, Georgina. They married on October 14, 1948 and settled in Liverpool to raise their family.
Herman was proud to start work at the Bowater Mersey Paper Company in Brooklyn, NS in 1950. He retired as foreman of the Groundwood Department in 1986 which allowed time for he and Georgina to explore the world in one of their many R.V.’s, bus tours and cruise ships.
Herman participated in local activities that included bowling, broomball and curling. He served as president of the Liverpool Lions Club, and the Queens Arena Association and was a member of the Zion United Church in Liverpool.
Herman was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He was known as a generous, spirited soul. He loved the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends at his cabin on Cameron Lake. Herman enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, traveling, curling and was an avid sports fan. Herman will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will always be remembered in their hearts.
Herman is survived by his daughters Lynn (John) Curphey of South Brookfield, Dawne Rawding (Shelley Nagle) of Halifax and his son Gary (Joyce Bowers) of Pentz. Grandchildren Stephanie (Jason) Kerr, Candace Curphey (Ryan Gall) and Ragan (Steve) Callahan and eight great grandchildren. His sisters Arlene McBride of Kempt, Jeanette Oickle of Dartmouth, Velda (Ronald) Forrest of Kempt. His brother Eldon (Suzanne) of Sherbrooke.
Besides his parents, Herman was predeceased by his wife Georgina who was his soul mate for 73 years, his sisters Marie Kempton and Shirley Dowling and his brothers Kendall, Glen and Leon.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. A memorial service for Herman and Georgina will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Burial will be in Zion United Cemetery, Payzant Street, Liverpool. No flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com. Masks are strongly encouraged when attending this service in person. Live streaming will be available on the day of the service at service time.
