It is with sadness and loss that we announce the passing of Philip Lloyd Anthony who passed away at Shoreham Village in Chester at the age of 88.
Born in Charleston, he was a son of late Grace (Mailman) (Anthony) MacKay, Upper Branch and Whitman Anthony, Charleston.
Raised in Charleston, Philip moved as his teaching career led him before settling for many years in the Bridgewater area. However, his heart was always at the “farmhouse” in Charleston.
Philip was a lifelong educator, graduating from Nova Scotia Normal College (Provincial Normal School) in Truro when was 18 years of age. He later received a B.A. and B.Ed from Acadia University in Wolfville and Diploma in Junior High Education from Nova Scotia Teachers Summer School. His teaching career included schools in Milton, Liverpool, and Bridgewater, at the junior and senior levels, including several terms as Vice-Principal. He was Head Teacher of Related Subjects at Lunenburg Regional Vocational School including evening classes for adults in Math and GED before being named Vice Principal.
Philip was also a businessman, operating the Candy Center on King Street in Bridgewater and co-owner of multiple buildings in Bridgewater, known as Anthony Apartments. He enjoyed travelling which included visits to Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, and cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean. He mostly enjoyed winters in Florida.
Philip enjoyed music, playing organ, guitar and ukulele. He loved dogs, with his most recent companions being Heidi and Sally. Social by nature, he always enjoyed a good conversation and expressed an interest in everyone he met. As a result, he leaves behind many friends, acquaintances, relatives and former students who will always remember their good times together.
Philip will be remembered by surviving family members, nephews Stephen (Ernie), Michael (Heather), nieces Janice (Kenny), Maureen (Paul), Cindy (Todd). Great nieces Jenna (Luke) and Micaela (Mike) and Great nephews Matthew (Tiffany), Jordan, Caleb, and Corbin,
Besides his parents, Philip was predeceased by stepfather Earle MacKay and brothers John, Byron and Neil (infancy) Anthony.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers Funeral Home, Liverpool. At Philip’s request there will be a graveside service at the New Charleston Cemetery on December 22 @ 11:00 am. No Flowers by request. Donations in Philip’s name can be made to the SHAID. The family would like to thank the staff at Shoreham Village for care and compassion.
