Nigel Barrington (Barry) Lucking, age 88, of Port Joli, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024, at 2 PM at Queens General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Barry’s final moments were a testament to the profound impact he had on those around him.
Born in Colchester, England, Barry was the beloved son of the late Arthur Joseph Stanley Lucking and Pontelian Lucking (Wright). He was the youngest of four children, preceded in death by his siblings Michael, Alison, and Jayne. Barry spent his formative years in England before advancing his education in Switzerland at the Rosenberg Institute, where he studied electronics.
Barry developed a passion for automobile racing while living in the UK, learning to race at the famous Silverstone Circuit. This love for racing followed him to Canada, where he often drove in races and brought the same enthusiasm to everyday driving, cornering as if he were still on the track, even during mundane errands.
In 1953, Barry immigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal with his siblings. He began his career at Associated Screen News as a sound recording engineer, a role that took him across Canada and the opportunity of a year long stint working for the Perry Como show in New York City. In 1975, Barry opened his own sound studio in downtown Montreal, named Studio Sonscript. Following this, he founded Quarry Lane Productions, a company aptly named after the hobby farm in Alexandria, Ontario where he raised his loving family.
Barry's love for the Maritimes led him to vacation annually on the South Shore of Nova Scotia with his family. After retiring, he moved permanently to Port Joli, where he was often visited by family and friends alike.
Barry is survived by his wife, Kathy, his children Tracy, Andrew, his blended family: Peter, David, Lorna, and Jeffrey. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Emma-Jayne and Joshua; Alzanne, Arthur and Aimeric; Hailey and Rory; Ellie and Jinwoo; Wren and Asher.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held in Nova Scotia at the Port Joli Community Center on Sunday May 19th beginning at 2pm. And at Georgian House in Alexandria, Ontario, on Sunday, June 2nd at 2:00 p.m. For further information, please contact Kathy via email at kathylucking.lucking@gmail.com or by phone (613) 363-9199.
