With sad hearts, the family of Neal Conrad announce his passing after a brief illness with lung cancer.
Born in Massachusetts, Neal was a son of the late Clyde and Cora (Bagley) Conrad.
Neal believed in hard work, starting his career with his father at the Texaco garage on Market Street. He then progressed to the school board where many students will fondly remember his jovial personality as he spent a few years driving a school bus. After that, he owned and operated his own dump truck, known to many as Tanngy, the big orange gravel truck. He then worked as a foreman with the Department of Transportation, from where he retired.
Inspired by Rod, who had signed up for a motorcycle course, Neal jumped in and took the last spot in the course. This started the motorcycle travel bug!
After retirement, Neal and Janet were fortunate to be able to spend 30 years and many miles travelling together and exploring the countryside. When they weren't driving down the highway on their motorcycle, they were rolling along in the truck and trailer. They have hundreds of stories as they clocked nearly 500,000 kilometres on their motorcycle adventures.
Both took great enjoyment in reading “maps” and spending nights in Walmart parking lots. During their travelling, they became especially fond of Ohio, returning there to spend time and see friends for 18 years.
Along with travelling, Neal had a love for music. He and Janet attended and enjoyed many music festivals throughout Atlantic Canada and beyond, especially relaxing in their bright folding chairs which they still have to this day.
Neal will forever be remembered by his larger than life personality. Although too humble to admit it, his spirit and love for life would light up any room.
Neal is survived by his high school true love, Janet, for whom he spent many hours patiently waiting for throughout their life together. He is also survived by their three children, Donna (Joey), Rod (Karen), Heather (Jayne), grandchildren Mitchell and Geoff and his sister Sylvia and her family.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, where visitation will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 from 6 until 8 p.m. Condolences and special memories may be passed along to Neal’s family at that time. In lieu of donations, please put some fuel in your vehicle and go for a drive, while listening to your favourite music and whistling along.
The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Alison Freeman and the staff of Queens General Hospital. Their love and support during this difficult time was simply above and beyond. Online condolences may be made below.
