Leslie Morton

Leslie Morton of Mersey Point, formerly of LaHave passed away suddenly at home on August 31, 2026, with her daughter by her side. She was the eldest daughter of the late Alister and Helen McKendrick. 

Leslie lived an extraordinary life, she was born and raised in Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika, where she spent her summers with her parents who worked there in the medical field. She spent her school years attending a boarding school in Scotland. She told fantastic stories of growing up with exotic animals and if you caught her when the mood struck, she could do an incredible monkey call. Her family immigrated to Canada from Scotland when Leslie was a teenager. It was in Canada that Leslie met her husband, Fred Morton. Together they lived in Germany and many places all over Canada including Nelson, BC, Calgary, AB, and several locations in Nova Scotia including on Sable Island. They settled in LaHave, NS to raise their two children and it was there that Leslie found her love of baking, preserving and gardening. She loved collecting local art, going on road trips, reading books, beach walks and listening to the sound of the ocean. Leslie also adored hearing about her son's adventures near and far. She had a great love for animals and after living many years in LaHave she moved to Mersey Point with her daughter where they started the little hobby farm they always wanted. She could often be found snuggling with the baby lambs and goats or being followed around by one of the many farm animals, or her beloved dog and cats. 

She explored a number of jobs in her life, including running a daycare for many local children, a receptionist, an archeological assistant and most notably as the sweets baker at the LaHave Bakery, designing many of the recipes still enjoyed today. But her most beloved job was raising her two children, Christopher and Sarah and encouraging them to also live and pursue a life of adventure, learning and discovery. 

Leslie is survived by her daughter, Sarah Morton, Mersey Point, NS; her son, Christopher Morton (Erin) of Chelsea, QC; her sister, Pauline McKendrick, Amherst, NS; and, her nephews, Anthony and Jeremy. 

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home in Liverpool.
