John Michael Walsh

d. February 25, 2026

John Michael Walsh, age 87, of Brooklyn, Queens County, passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 25th, 2026, at Queens General Hospital, with loving family by his side.  John Mike was the youngest son of the late G. Evelyn and Michael Hugh Walsh.

John Mike is survived by his beloved daughter, Margo Walsh-Leaman, beloved son-in-law, Mark Leaman, and his pride and joy, granddaughter Grace, He is also survived by sisters- in- law Loretta Walsh, Carol ( Dr.Ernest) Ewaschuk, and Lane McLelan, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.

John Mike was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Sandra, his brother William and his sister Marianne and her husband Alfred.

John Mike retired from Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited in 1996 as Transportation and Finishing Superintendent. He was an active member of the Bowater Mersey Band and the Kinsmen Club of Liverpool for many years and served as board member of the South Shore District School Board.

Following his retirement, John Mike was touched by the warm welcome he received from the United Church community and was honored to serve in a number of volunteer roles within the Brooklyn Pastoral Charge. He became a devoted caregiver to Sandra following her stroke.

In their earlier years, Sandra and John Mike enjoyed travelling to Barbados for winter escapes and loved to attend dances in the local community and beyond. In their retirement, they enjoyed quieter times on Ponhook lake, each with a good book in hand and a little fire on first thing in the morning “to take the chill off.”

In his final years John Mike was blessed by the kindness of his neighbors, who always kept a close eye out for him, by the generosity of family and friends who stopped by for visits to reminisce and share stories, and by the loyalty of caregivers Ashley and Heather and his housekeeper Tammy, who helped grant him his final wish to remain at home for as long as it was possible.

Our sincerest thanks to the incredible staff at Queens General Hospital, whose compassion touched Dad each day he was a patient at QGH. To Dr. Andy Blackadar, words simply cannot express our gratitude for the time spent with Dad and our family, at home and at his bedside throughout his final weeks, ensuring his remaining days were filled with comfort and dignity.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Queens General Hospital Foundation, or to Bethany United Church, Mill Village. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.chandlers funeral.com.
