Luxton - Jean S., 83, of Kempt, Queens County, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, NS.
Born in Halifax, Jean was a daughter of the late Albert and Rose (Burgess) Smith
Mom’s happiest days were spent at the cabin on Mill Lake. That was her sanctuary, her happy place, where she found peace and joy surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of family. Whether it was the sound of the water, the cries of the loons, the laughter of her family, or the simple pleasure of a quiet morning with a puzzle, the cabin was where her heart truly felt at home. One of the greatest testaments to Mom’s character was her unwavering devotion and love for our father. For more than 62 years, they shared a partnership built on deep respect, friendship, and affection. Their bond was an inspiration to all of us — a true example of enduring love and commitment. Together, they faced life’s joys and challenges, always supporting one another and building a family rooted in love.
Mom was a woman of many talents and strengths. She worked at Sears Canada and later managed her own country convenience store, where her warmth and kindness touched everyone who walked through the door. But her biggest and most cherished job was raising the four of us. She poured her heart into motherhood, always putting her family first and making sure we felt loved and cared for every single day.
Even before she had a family of her own, Mom’s generosity shone brightly. She used her salary to buy things like snowsuits for her nieces and nephews, always thinking of others and making sure those she loved were cared for and comfortable. Her kindness extended far beyond her immediate family, and she made a difference in the lives of so many.
In the early years of her marriage, Mom supported our father through his military career. She spent time in Germany and all over Nova Scotia on military bases, adapting to new places and new challenges with resilience and grace. As a supportive military wife, she often took care of all four children on her own while our father was away, never wavering in her strength or her love for our family.
Mom had a passion for life’s little joys—she loved puzzles, genealogy research, music and jewelry (the more, the better!). She cherished being surrounded by family, especially her grandchildren, and she had a special place in her heart for every baby she met, whether related or not.
She was a godmother to some of her nieces and nephews and a beloved aunt to all, and the fifth of six siblings in a close-knit family. Her kindness and generosity extended far beyond her immediate family—she made everyone feel welcome and loved.
What we will remember most about Mom is her open heart. She was always ready with a smile, a listening ear, and a helping hand and that showed in her commitment to Eastern Star, community suppers and events and other support groups. She taught us the importance of family, of caring for one another, and of finding joy in simple things.
Jean is survived by her husband of 62 years Floyd; her daughter Cindy (Denis Durocher) of St. Zotique, PQ; her sons Michael (Glenda) of Seaforth, NS; Mark of Kempt and Neil of Liverpool. Her grandchildren Shalene, Bryton and Blaze. Her sister Diane (Rob) Hubbard of Lower Sackville. Her sister in law Barbara Smith and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her sisters Vivian Snow, Helen Irving and her brothers James and Jack.
