Nelson - Harry L., 92, of Greenfield, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General hospital, Liverpool, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
Born in Vogler’s Cove, Harry was a son of the late James and Pearl (Conrad) Nelson.
Harry was a river driver on Lake Elmer for ten years and worked for the Markland Shipping Company hauling lumber to Northern Ireland and England. He worked on a Christmas tree lot and did tobacco picking in Ontario. The majority of his life, Harry was a private contractor for Bowater Mersey Paper company cutting and hauling pulpwood and also delivering firewood to many people in Queens County.
Harry was a member of the Greenfield and District Fire Department for over 40 years; 23 of those years he served as chief. He was a Queens County Mutual Aid member and a past president, a director for the Nova Scotia Firefighter School and a member of the Nova Scotia Fire Chiefs Association. Harry was a recipient of the QEII Diamond Jubilee Medal. He served as a member of the former Greenfield Elementary School Board, one of the founding members of the Greenfield Recreation Association serving as president and director, director of the International Woodmen Competition and a member and director of the North Queens Board of Trade. He also participated in Friday night bowling league for years.
Surviving are his daughter Susan of Greenfield, his son Ricky of Halifax, his grandson Ryan (Sam) of Halifax and his step son David of Liverpool.
Besides his parents, Harry was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Roxy (Hartlen), his sisters Mona and Molly and his brothers Carl, Jimmy and Max.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. At Harry’s request, there will be no funeral service. Online condolences may be made below.
