The family of Dr. David F. Large, age 84, regretfully announce his passing at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, on June 30, after a 9-month illness.
Dave graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1969 and practiced family medicine in Liverpool for 32 years. In those years, before paramedics staffed ambulances, family doctors were first on site to triage and treat the injured. He always said that family practice was the most rewarding because family doctors learned about and from the families they cared for and as well had the opportunity to teach them how to deal with non-threatening illness first at home, before calling a doctor.
Dave had a lifelong love of music, singing for over 30 years in Zion United Church choir, starting and directing a barbershop chorus and quartet and finally joining Nova Voce, the provincial men’s choir, for 15 years. He also served his community as a Kinsman, a 3-term town councillor, chair of the local Liberal Association and a 15-year member of the Nova Scotia Voluntary Planning Board. Finally, over the years and as time permitted, he indulged his passion for sailing, skiing, motorcycling, bridge and Port Joli sunsets.
He was predeceased by his parents, Hon. Frederic A. Large and Mildred G. (Cox) Large and his first wife, Marilyn K. (MacLean) Large. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne A. Smith-Large, sons Peter and Phillip, grandchildren Garrett, Griffin, Graydon, Lauren and Katherine, sister Susan Gregory and brother Donald Large.
The remains have been cremated under the care of Chandlers' Funeral Services where a service will be held on July 2 at 2pm, with reception to follow. Interment and a Celebration of Life will take place later in the summer.
His family wishes to thank Dr. Andrew Blackadar and the nursing staff at Queens General Hospital for their excellent care. We also wish to thank his many patients over the years who trusted his care and, in many cases, also became friends.
