Cole, Richard “Dick” Hilton

With great sadness, the family of Richard Hilton Cole of Milton announces he passed away peacefully on January 5, 2024 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool.

Born in Westfield, NS, he was the son of the late Clyde and Edna (Frail) Cole.

Dick started his working life scooping ice cream part time at T.W. Carten’s store in South Brookfield, often getting reprimanded for making the scoops too big – he did like his ice cream. He moved to Liverpool in 1953 and started a career in newspapers working for The Liverpool Advance, Dartmouth Free Press and Saint John Telegraph setting type and maintaining the Linotype machine. He eventually took electronics courses by correspondence and started his career with Nova Scotia Power working his way up to Western Zone Hydro Superintendent, before retiring in 1993.

He met the love of his life Marguerite (Freeman) Cole when he moved into a boarding house next door to her family home in Milton. They were married on June 9, 1962 and had 54 beautiful years together.

Dick had the most incredible sense of humour and would tease anybody and everybody, always trying to get a laugh. He especially loved laughing and joking with Derinda and the staff at The Transcotia restaurant, who became a second family, and where he could be found most days for at least one meal. In his spare time over the years, Dick bought, repaired and sold many cars mostly purchased from Hatt’s Garage. He was a craftsman as well, building many beautiful guitars and instruments. He loved spending time in his shop thinking up and building all kinds of gadgets and novelty items. You never knew what he would come up with. Dick was a deeply spiritual man, with great faith. He was a church deacon, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir over the years.

Dick is survived by his son; Bradford (Odea) Cole, sisters; Judy (Steve) MacPhee, Margie (Hal) Dunlop and brother Eric (Judy) Cole; sister-in-law Lorna Cole. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Marguerite; brothers Jim, Dale, Peter and John.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, January 11th at 11:00 am, followed by a reception, all from Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. A private family graveside service will follow. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Dick’s memory to the North Brookfield, South Brookfield and Westfield Baptist Churches or SHAID Animal Shelter. To share memories or condolences please visit www.chandlers.com.

The family would like to send their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support staff at Queens General Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion they showed Dick during his time there. Also to the staff at Queens Home Support for their care and visits. A special Thank You as well to Jim Gaskell for being there for Dick in the last few years for visits and for ensuring he was ok on a daily basis.
