Carol Lee McKnight, 76, of Milton, Nova Scotia, died peacefully at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater on Saturday, October 31, 2026, after a recurrence of cancer. She spent her final week surrounded by her family and dear friends.
Born in Liverpool, Queens County, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Marion (Legge) Uhlman. On March 9, 1974, she married James William (Bill) McKnight. They were together until his death in January, 2017.
Carol made her home her life’s work, and rest was something she never quite figured out. She built and tended flower gardens around her property, full of perennials and shrubs, and kept the wild backyard from taking over, mostly. She took weeds personally. She felt best and most herself outside, making her yard a little better than she’d found it.
Whatever time was left went to her hands. Ash basketry was a big part of her life, and she quilted by hand for as long as anyone can remember. She gave what she made. Her friends and family could count on something handmade at Christmas, and that was how she said she loved them. She dabbled in painting and loved math and word games. In winter there was almost always a puzzle underway on the kitchen table.
The beach was always part of her life. After Bill died, her dog Nulla became her constant companion, and the two of them took long walks along the shore whenever they could.
Carol is survived by her children Troy (Wendy) of Kelowna, B.C.; Julie (Aaron) and grandson Jax of Halifax; and James (Mai-Ling) of Simms Settlement; her sister Diana Oickle of Milton; and her brother Donald Uhlman of Brooklyn.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. A graveside service will be held at the Milton Community Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.
