Manthorne- Brian Stuart, 76, of Milton, Queens County, passed away on August 8th, 2021, at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool.
Brian retired from Nova Scotia Power on July 1st, 1997 after 32 years of service. He worked as an Area Control Operator until the control room closed and then as a utilityman on the Mersey Hydro System.
Brian was a kind hearted man and was always willing to lend a hand. He enjoyed nature and was always happy going for a walk through his wood lot and doing silviculture work to improve it. When not in the woods or visiting his friends, he was usually outside tending to the property, gardens and his grapevine. He liked to read, especially books on local history or anything pertaining to W.W.I. He tried never to miss John Leefe’s radio show “A Moment In Time”. He also enjoyed travelling to various provinces and trips abroad to the sunny south.
Brian was a son of the late Edward and Emma (Faulkner) Manthorne. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; sister, Marjorie Randall of Bridgewater; as well as sister-in-law, Bertha Manthorne; brother-in-law, Merrill Stafford; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by sisters, Phyllis Moore, Helen Nickerson, Elsie Stafford, Gloria Meers; brothers, Hector, Eric and Edward.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Service, Liverpool. At Brian’s request there will be no funeral service. Donations in Brian’s memory may be made to Queens General Hospital Foundation, Milton Community Cemetery or to the Queens County V.O.N.. To share memories or condolences, please visit chandlersfuneral.com
Special thanks to Dr. Blackadar, Dr. Mullen, Dr. Cosh, Dr. Rigby, Dr. Lannon, Dr. Wilkie, Dr. Howlett, nurses in the chemotherapy department of South Shore Regional Hospital, Natalie Brooks and the VO.N. who helped us throughout this journey. Many thanks also go to the nurses on the second floor at Queens General Hospital for the excellent care they gave to Brian, the concern and all the hugs I received.
Offer Condolence for the family of Manthorne; Brian Stuart

August 2021
Dear Phyllis,
You have been in my thoughts and prayers, ever since I read that Brian has passed away. Unfortunately, I have been sick with a bad flu ever since this past Monday and haven’t felt up to writing this until now. I’ve had my two COVID shots, but am going to be tested just the same, tomorrow afternoon, and although I am almost 100% confident that it will come back negative, apparently I will be required to self-isolate for 14 days, either way!
I have a card to drop into the mail for you, but may not even be able to do that anytime soon, so I thought that I would write this little note to you, even though you may have to wait a bit for the card to arrive. The card says, “We have lost someone special”, which is not your usual sympathy card, but with me losing Larry just 6 months ago and now, you losing Brian, it seemed to fit. I have also enclosed a picture of the four of us standing together the night that Larry and I were married, 48 years ago. And if my memory serves me correctly, you and Brian would have been celebrating your 50th Anniversary this September.
When I look at the picture that I am going to enclose in the card, it’s hard to believe that the years have gone by so quickly, and now, both Larry and Brian are gone. It’s almost as if the ‘rapture’ has taken place and we were left behind! We are all standing there in the picture, looking so happy and healthy, with no reason to believe that anything would change or that we wouldn’t be able to enjoy spending our ‘golden years’ with the love of our lives.
The card mentions sharing our sadness, but we have many happy memories to share, as well. We were fortunate to have our husbands for as long as we did and thinking about all of the happy memories that you and Brian made together will help you to get through this, just as the happy memories that Larry and I made together are helping me to get through each day. You will always carry a part of Brian in your heart – and for me, a part of Larry in mine. You can’t love someone and share your life with them for that many years, without them claiming a part of your heart.
Phyllis, keep your trust in God – He is faithful and He promises never to leave us nor forsake us! I used to tease Larry when he would get discouraged and remind him that God had even put a promise just for him in the Bible. Then I would smile and say, “LOWE – I am with you always!” 🙂 It worked every time!
There is no right or wrong way to grieve, but based on what the last six months have been like for me, you will go through all sorts of emotions and sometimes find it impossible to believe that Brian is actually gone. I still have times when I turn to share a good story with Larry, or reach out for him in the night, only to realize once again that his warm, strong body will never be there in my bed again.
However, as much as I miss him, I wouldn’t want him back in the condition that he was in. God was ready to take him Home and Larry was ready to go. I try to focus on the many good times that we shared when Larry was still healthy and happy, instead of focusing on the fact that he had an incurable disease and watching Parkinsons and Dementia claim more and more of him as time went on.
Well, Phyllis – I’ve rambled on long enough and I hope that some of the things that I’ve shared with you will help to encourage you. I’m here, as are many others, if you feel like you need someone to share your feelings with. More people than you realize care deeply about you and would drop everything in a minute if they could help in any way and I’m one of them. Take care, Phyllis and know that you are surrounded by love and prayers at this very difficult time in your life.
Lynn xoxo

Hi Phyllis
Again you have our deepest sympathy for Brian’s passing. I think of him often and you have our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Brian and I spent a lot of time together when we were growing up in Milton. I spent more time at my grandparents and his home than I did in my own home. He was more than an uncle to me – more like a brother and a good friend. I will miss him. I regret not seeing him in the recent past but travel restrictions did not allow it, I talked to him occasionally and remember our last visit well.
Hoping to see you in the not too distant future. Hang in there.
