It is with great love and aching hearts that we announce the passing of Dorothy Anne MacKinnon who died very peacefully on February 26 in the arms of her family.
Dorothy Anne was born in Yarmouth on June 14 1930 where she lived a life full of music, dance and laughter with her parents Doris and Eric Rogers and her younger brother Eric “Bub” who have predeceased her. She leaves behind her husband of 64 years, Robert Kitchener (RK), daughters Barbara (Ulf) Snarby, Bev Pettersen, Becky (Archie) Mason and son John (Lori) MacKinnon. She cherished the spirit of young children and embraced her role as grandmother to Kristopher, Andreas, Hans, Brenna, Ben, Liana, Nathaniel, Bria and her great- grandchildren Tove and Trig.
Dorothy Anne loved children. Immediately after graduating from Normal (Teachers) College in Truro in 1949 she started a 41 year career as a kindergarten teacher – first as a primary teacher in Liverpool and later in the kindergarten program she operated from her home. She taught hundreds of Queens County children the importance of caring, sharing and being a good friend.
It was her pursuit of a teaching career that brought her to Liverpool and to the love of her life – RK.. Together they created an incredible home for their family, tackled life’s challenges, celebrated big and small wins and travelled to new and exciting places – they created a magic and we are all better for it.
Never one with a high tolerance for whining or drama, Dorothy Anne accepted a dementia diagnosis straight on. With the support of family, her Main Street neighbours and the amazing care of her special friend Trisha Doucette, she continued to enjoy being surrounded by family, celebrations at Ponhook Lake and Corkum Road, laughing with friends and enjoying friendly people. Her final months were made so much easier by the wonderful staff at Harbourview Haven where she enjoyed a new freedom, made people smile and met new friends like Shirley, Lois, Hilda and Barry.
Dorothy Anne was of small stature but left a big footprint and a mark that lasts. She was a member of the Zion United Church and its choir for over 50 years, served on the Liverpool School Board and Queens Family and Children Services; was an advocate for people with learning disabilities, was a staunch supporter for the Progressive Conservatives, supported the Queens County Festival and has been the consummate fan for sports teams and musicians from Queens County. Her cheers, laughter and guidance will resonate forever.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool where visitation will be held Monday February 29, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. A service to celebrate her full and wonderful life will be held Tuesday, March 1 at 2:00 at Zion United Church in Liverpool. Reverend Carol Smith and Reverend Joanne McFadden officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later time. Family flowers only, donations in her memory can be made to the Zion United Church Liverpool, the Queens Food Bank or Astor Theatre Society. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.

Dorothy Ann was indeed, a special lady. She was my Kindergarten teacher, my neighbor, and we sang in the United Church choir together. She was always positive, proactive, warm and kind. There have been far too many special people leave Liverpool during the past few months. However, they were such strong individuals that their spirits will always linger in the community and exist in all those lives that they touched. Sending love and hugs.

Dear MacKinnon family,
I am so very sorry to read of your loss. I know the past few years have had their challenges, but nothing really prepares us to say good-bye. “Mrs. MacKinnon”, as she will always be to me and my generation of Liverpudlians, holds a special place in my heart as the first of many inspirational teachers I’ve been fortunate to have in my life. The group of us who went to her nursery school in, I think, 1968 (!) remained lifelong friends, and that is in no small measure due to her example of kindness and caring – that, and enforcing the no hitting rule. (I’m looking at you Peter Samuels.) That thread of kindness and caring will pull the family through these tough times too. Please accept my condolences.

To R.K. & Family, Dorothy Anne was one of the sweetest ladies I had the pleasure of ever knowing. She taught Our Daniel in her preschool and thought so much of him. We became such great Friends and spent a lot of hours together. She made me feel like one of her own. You all made me feel like part of your Family. I will never forget Our talks, our walks and sometimes runs. The way she would do this little smile when she got ice cream or candy, almost like she thought she was getting away with something. Dorothy Anne was a dainty little lady with a heart of gold. I will always keep you in my heart and cherish the memories. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. xoxo

We have lost a good friend. The MacKinnon household has always been a happy and welcoming place with Dorothy Anne very much at the centre. Her contributions to our community, to the education of youth, to her church and to grass roots democracy and not least of all to her multi-generational family, established a model well worthy of emulation. Dorothy Anne’s good works stood us all in good stead. She well be well and fondly remembered as one among us who made a difference. What better epitaph could one ask.

What a remarkable tribute to a precious soul!! Her very essence just leapt from those loving words. Dave and I consider ourselves so very blessed to have been enveloped in the MacKinnon Magic, especially when we moved here not knowing a soul in town. That magic was a palpable force that made a person feel always welcome, never hurried, regardless of the time of day. Dorothy Anne and RK raised their children to be the same way; what better testament to the goodness of a parent could there be? We have missed Dorothy Anne already from Main Street these last months, and will contnue to mourn this tremendous loss.
Best regards to all who loved her, a very large crowd.

We used to visit Uncle RK and Aunt Dorothy Anne a couple of times a year, and it was always like going to a wonderland, with the big house upstairs, and a kindergarten all to ourselves downstairs. My father, RK’s brother, Ian, liked to keep any visit to a family member under 30 minutes, so these visits were always short. But sweet.
It wasn’t until I got older, and went to Dal, that I started meeting non-family members from Liverpool. And they all had in common that they knew Aunt Dorothy Anne. Most of them had gone to the kindergarten, and it was only then that I realized how much my aunt had had an impact on several generations.
Aunt Dorothy Anne will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Anne Espenant (Melanson)

I wanted to send you my sincere condolences to all the family at this time of loss. I have many fond memories of your Mom over the years. She was a force and fun to be with. I remember going with your parents and Bev on the road trip to New Brunswick with my horse (Joe) to the pony club rally and what fun we had. Your Mom was so exited and proud of you Bev. I also remember being at your home with Barb and friends for some of the Russia vs. Canada hockey games. She always was so welcoming and offered up a big smile. RK you have been a wonderful husband and caregiver. It was always clear to see how you two loved each other. My thoughts are with all of you, Esther Mosher

R K and family I was so sorry to see that Dorothy Ann had died. My heartfelt thoughts are with you at this time. I remember my two boys were with her for kindergarten. They had a good launch with her on Main street and then living down the road for many years she always had a smile for the children in the neighborhood. What a wonderful woman. Best wishes as you keep her in your thought. I know we will.

Thought John and Nancy Leefe said it all. What a great Lady. Sad for your loss Becky and RK…know she meant the world to you.
