Lawson;

LAWSON — Amy Belle (Hupman), 84 of Summerville Centre passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, July 27th 2013 after a long battle with ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Born July 1st, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Mildred (Davis) Hupman and lived all her life in her beloved community of Summerville.

Amy was an educator by vocation and by nature. She attended Teacher’s College and taught in one room school houses throughout the 1950’s and at Port Mouton Consolidated School through the 60’s and 70’s. She returned as a teacher’s aide in the 80’s and was a tutor to local children throughout her career. Amy was also a genealogist and writer. She has written a history of her local church, the local cenotaph in Port Mouton and two thorough volumes of Hupman family history going back to the mid 1700s. She also took on a labour of love in reproducing the columns her mother Mildred wrote for the Liverpool Advance in a book called “Diary of a Village“. She was a tireless worker for her Summerville Christian Church, a volunteer for decades at The Queen’s Manor and has worked on many boards and local charities. She devoted her life to the education and betterment of children and her community and touched countless lives young and old through her long and productive life. Amy led by example and was a study in courage, compassion, and determined and rigorous intelligence

She will be sorely missed by her loving family; daughter Laura (Steven) Dobson, of Dartmouth; sons Daniel (Paul Pilcher), of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Raymond (Janelle), of Prince Rupert, B.C.; daughter-in-law Betty Jean, of Summerville Centre; grandchildren Nancy, Kelly, Ryan, Mandy, Danielle, Bradford; great-grandchildren Chloe, Wyatt, Fiore; sisters Audrey Wagner, of Summerville Centre, Jean Mansfield, of Milton, Grace (Mack) Robinson, of Trenton, Ontario; brothers Clair (Lorraine) Hupman, of Summerville, Vernon Hupman, of Texas.

She suffered many losses in her later life and was predeceased by her parents Aubrey and Mildred, her husband of 41 years Murray in 1992, her beautiful granddaughter Amy in 2008, her beloved son Ronald in 2010 and younger sister Betty in 2012.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening (July 31th, 2013) from 7 until 9 p.m. at Chandler’s Funeral Home and funeral service will be Thursday, August 1st, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., at Summerville Christian Church. I would like to send my sincere condolences to all of Amy’s family. I had the pleasure of meeting Amy back in the 1990s while we were both doing research at the Queens County Museum and we remained friends over the past 20 something years. She had such a passion for history and loved to share her knowledge. The many projects that she researched and recorded are a treasure to future generations. She was a wonderful friend and will be sadly missed.

Condolence from Jan Pottie on July 29th, 2013 1:55 pm

To all of Amy’s family and especially to Raymond, Laura, Danny-There is simply no one who can take Amy’s place or ever fill her shoes. Amy took many quiet steps and helped build an open and welcoming community. When May 24th came around and it was time to open the cottage and move to Summerville, Amy always made us feel welcome, accepting our summer presence as a natural part of the community. How many garden parties, suppers and bake sales did we share? How often did my mother make me rush to a bake sale just for a loaf of Amy’s brown bread, or comment when something was good at a church supper, “that must be Amy’s.” How often do I begin a sentence with “Amy Lawson told me”. If I needed to know something about Summerville I called Amy and she usually knew the answer. If she didn’t know right away she said she would “have to sketch it out” and get back to me.. Amy said she couldn’t just remember things, she had to sketch things out first to get the details right and then write them down. And she always added other details, always teaching to make sure we knew where we lived and that we lived in her uncle’s house, a Hupman house. It was uncanny but sometimes I would feel like I was talking to her mother over one of the “Items”. In recent years we competed for the wild pears that seem to spring from nowhere in Summerville-I can’t say where-though she usually got to them first, for pickling. I have never taken her warmth, curiosity and acceptance for granted. She will live in the hearts of so many of us who spent our young summers at the beach and have returned as adults because Amy helped make it a good place for us to live. Rest in peace Amy and thank-you for everything….Jan

To all Amy’s family, my heartfelt condolences – Amy lived her life true to her faith and her love of her family, church and community..she faced the many losses in her later years with courage and grace- a testament to her strong faith – that she had to endure the ravishes of ALS in her later years on top of all else was sad indeed. Condolence from Dave Hupman on July 29th, 2013 5:58 pm

To Laura, Raymond, Danny; my condolences on the loss of a very favourite Aunt.
As a child I participated in a lot of fun events with you guys as well as with Aunt Amy and Uncle Murray and Ronnie. I remember sleepovers when we were 9 or 10 years old with Ronnie, Raymond, and myself all sleeping in 1 bed upstairs and about 2:00 AM I had a bloody nose and Aunt Amy woke up and came to the rescue. She was good at stopping nose-bleeds (had a fair bit of practice). She was also the best at getting pieces of dirt out of your eyes, I remember we would always go to her if we needed help with that. We used to play board games in the Lawson house, and she always was there to referee. I particulalrly remember one lesson she taught us, when she lectured Ronnie, Raymond, and myself, that we had to stand up for each other at school. My dad has a lot of stories to tell about growing up with his sister Amy, and she could certainly hold her own with the brothers. She was very athletic, and maintained her fitness all through her life. About the time we were in high school, I remember Aunt Amy and Uncle Murray dropping in to mom and dad’s house almost every evening for tea; and laughing, always laughing, over some story. She always made a point of visiting whenever I came “home” to Summerville. I love the family genealogy that she has spent so many, many countless hours preparing; it is a tremendous gift to our family.
Aunt Amy will be missed by all who knew her.

When I read of Amy’s passing this morning several images came to mind. Her smile, kindness to all, her love for her family and her great faith. She loved to bake and give to others. She arrived at the adult high school one day and brought her chocolate chip cookies to the students for a treat. This continued throughout my time there. She thought they would like them and she was happy that they were getting an education. She made a difference in so many lives in her quiet way. She was a beautiful person. God Bless!

Condolence from Debbie (Hupman) Thibault on July 30th, 2013 6:31 am

To Dan, Ray and Laura…..I cried tears of selfishness on Saturday morning when I heard about Aunt Amy’s passing. It is a blessing that she is finally at peace but so overwhelmingly sad for the family. I share my twin brother, Dave’s, sentiments..she was a favourite Aunt and for me, my second Mom and a wonderful mentor in life. Mom keeps telling me my ability to write academic papers and to study comes from Aunt Amy and Gram Hupman. I will always remember the laughter and love that she shared with so many. She has touched lives not only within Summerville but way beyond! Love and peace to you and your families!!

Condolence from Janice Mitchell on July 30th, 2013 6:34 am

To Laura, Dan and Raymond…..may you find strength and comfort in each other and in the loved ones who surround you during this sad and difficult time. I did not know Amy personally, but I have eaten many a loaf of her famous and delicious brown bread, and I know she was a wonderful lady who inspired many. Her battle with ALS is now over….may she rest in peace.

Condolence from Penny Scott on July 30th, 2013 7:11 am

My deepest and heartfelt condolences to all Hupman and Lawson families especially Raymond, Laura & Danny. So sad to know that Amy died, but grateful that she was part of our lives, however briefly every summer I spent in Summerville in the Dexter cottage. Memories of brown bread& molasses cookies brought me back to her kitchen recently as she was for me a beacon of wisdom, warmth and unconditional acceptance during an uncertain time. Amy’s spirit lives on in Dexter family stories of summer visits in Summerville. As busy as Amy was she always made time for a visit. As for me, summer was not complete without a visit with Amy. Rest easy, dear friend.

Aunt Amy always had a great story that we had never heard before and her enthusiasm for life and curiosity constantly amazed us. She was a true Renaissance woman. I want to thank her for the two Hupman history books, which have settled several disputes and for introducing us to duckpins (and then beat the pants off us). A light has passed from this earth into our hearts to live there forever. To Dan, Ray and Laura and the rest of the extended family, we send our love and a big hug.
