KEMPTON – Raymond L., 80, of Kempt, Queens County, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 10, 2023 surrounded by his family.
Born Vogler’s Cove, Raymond was a son of the late Lawrence and Carrie (Conrad) Kempton.
Raymond was a mechanic by trade. He worked for various dealerships as well as Supervisor of Maintenance at Kejimkujik National Park. He retired from the South Shore Regional School Board as supervisor of Bussing and Janitorial. Raymond was known by his family as a “jack of all trades and master of some” and could be relied upon to fix almost anything and supply parts for most other things. Raymond loved spending time with his family at his cabin on Harmony Lake. He will be fondly and lovingly remembered for his kind hearted teasing and his patience.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine (Holdright); his daughters Julie-Anne Kempton of Kempt; Kim Kempton (Mark Halman) of Halifax. His grandchildren Luke Young, Jack and Benny Halman.
Besides his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his brothers John and Ralph.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside memorial service will be held Monday, April 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in Harmony Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to North Queens Fire Association. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com

How very sad. A favourite cousin. Going to visit at their home, and seeing the electronic things he had, before it was popular. So talented. One of the few people to visit our house in Voglers cove. Managed to get into the radio station and started playing music. Cars lined up in our front yard, listening to this person , coming from our house. I will never forget him coming to uncle Alfreds house to see me when I was visiting in Nova Scotia.

Sad news indeed. Raymond always had time to talk to me in my youth. He will surely be missed.
Here’s a fun fact about Raymond.
He taught himself electronics in his youth.
He built a radio broadcasting station and entertained the area with music and other nonsense.
The Department of Communications looked for him for years so they could shut him down, but could never find him.
They didn’t know that his transmitter was in his car and he transmitted as he drove around the Caledonia area.

So sorry to hear of Raymond’s passing. When I was younger I loved our chats about mechanics and electrical projects. I’ll always remember his story about playing country records to friends across the AM airways in Caledonia. He loved to tinker and he could do anything. To the Kempton family,
We were deeply saddened to read Raymond’s obituary tonight. As a young man, Raymond worked with my Dad, Cecil Lewis, and the rest of the gang at Liverpool Chrysler Dodge. Dad always thought a lot of Raymond and often stopped for a little visit going or coming from Kedge. Wherever any of our family encountered Raymond, he knew us all and stopped to catch up. He was a kind and thoughtful man, with a great sense of humor. The world needs more folks like Raymond.
The video tribute is very touching- a wonderful tribute to such a well respected fellow. We know that you all will miss him , but may his endearing smile and all the good memories bring you comfort as you say goodbye.

Elaine, Julie-Anne, Kim and Families
Being a “non-local girl” I enjoyed hearing the escapades Albert shared with Raymond…especially about the radio broadcasts of music (country of course) produced by the pair in Caledonia. Visits from Elaine and Raymond at Harmony Lake were always enjoyed. Raymond was interested in family and children of all ages and would carry on a meaningful conversation with each one, and our children always spoke of that talent he had. Much will be remembered of Raymond’s mechanical and “fix it” skills as well as his love and respect for Elaine, their daughters, son-in-law, and grandsons. We acknowledge the comfort and care you provided during his illness as you cherish the great memories. Our thoughts are with you. Hugs from Ruth, Jo-Anne, Chris, Violet and Malcolm, Halifax: Alan, Melanie, Albert and Lenore, Windsor, Ontario.

To all of Raymond’s family and friends, heartfelt sympathy on your loss. What a great guy. A friend to Eric and I since we all were classmates at NQRHS. Anytime we met there was always lots to talk about. Eric shared Raymond’s passion for cars, and Elaine and I were lucky to get a word in edgewise. It was always enjoyable to have a catch up chat when our paths crossed. We will miss those chats. Hold all the special memories close in your hearts. They will bring some smiles, even on the darkest days.
