JOUDREY – Grace Matilda, known to all as “Nanny”, 91, of Greenfield, Queens County, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 in North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia NS where she had been a resident since February 1, 2019.
Born in Waterloo to the late Albert St. Clair and Alexdrinia “Sadie” (Wile) Veinot, she was the last surviving member of a family of nine children.
Grace loved being surrounded by her family and friends and treasured every moment of visits. Along with the love for her family, she was passionate in all kinds of hand work. She loved to sew and for many years made aprons for the Sewing Circle for their seasonal tea and sales. She was always working at knitting, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, tatting or any other hand work she could pick up. She would spend hours on word search books and crosswords and faithfully did the lexicon, but never sent it in. She just enjoyed the challenge! Her love for the outdoors and for anything that she could grow showed in her radiant array of colors in her flower gardens as well as the bountiful produce she would get from her vegetable gardens. She looked forward to all the salting, pickling, canning and preserving while smiling as she thought of the long winter days ahead. But she made sure they were ready for it with lots of jars, buckets, barrels and bins full to the top for the season.
Another passion she so dearly looked forward to was spending time with the grandchildren and eagerly working on crafts with them. Every year as Easter rolled around she found herself counting the days knowing the grandchildren would be there to paint an assortment of Easter eggs to give to other family members or to a friend on Easter morning. She could never get enough of family gatherings and looked forward to every occasion that would once again allow the family to gather around the giant size table for a family meal.
In her younger days, she was always kept busy doing home perms for the ladies of the community and cutting the hair of their children while at the same time so dearly enjoying the visit of a good friend. Another place for family and friends was at the community hall card parties or even in your own home – now there you could really laugh all evening. What a joy life was!
Grace is survived by her son Larry (Marcella Publicover) and their children; Cory, Tracy (Paxson) Ngassa and Tanya (Michael) Joudrey-Crouse. Daughters Sandra Cardinell and her two girls Shauna Hatt and Paula Cardinell and Faye (Gordon) Joudrey-Hamilton. Nine great grandchildren Cody Hatt, Sean and Julian Cardinell, Cassandra and Jordan Joudrey, Jade Nauss, Leyton, Bennet and Stella Ngassa, two great great grandchildren MacKenzy Cardinell and Skylar Joudrey. As well as her “Chosen son” and his wife Lawrence “Sonny” and Deborah “Debbie” Ramey and her two remaining sisters in law Gladys Veinot and Hazel (Veinot) Delong.
She was predeceased by her husband Jordan Carver in November 1997 and her one and only sister Helen (Elmer) Ramey as well as her seven brothers Wilbert, Ernest, Maurice, Harry, Hazen, Murray and Lawrence.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. At Grace’s request, there will be a private family graveside memorial service held at a later date. No flowers by request as she stated that flowers would not be a necessity at this time whereas a donation to a good cause would be more beneficial. Memorial donations may be made to the Greenfield United Baptist Church, Greenfield Fire Dept., North Queens Nursing Home or to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com.

So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was a great lady and a hard worker. She use to do lots of sewing for my Mom years ago and Mom would say “My that woman can sew and it takes her no time to do it.” Remember all the good times you had with her and that she is now free from all her ills. Sandra, Larry, Faye and families:
Sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom. One of my favourite memories of Grace was from a Sunday School picnic at Summerville Beach. There were always various races and scrambles for us children but one year there was a race for our mothers. Grace with her long legs left the others in the dust, so to speak. Those were fun times. May you find comfort in fond memories.

No words can express my sadness of Graces passing. But no sadness can take away the memories and love I have felt for her over the years of knowing her.
She was an exceptional woman, always welcoming and kind. She loved her family more than they can possibly know and it showed, when she spoke of any of them!
Her kindness and love towards me will never go forgotten! In the 17+ years I was privileged enough to be part her life, she taught me a lot of valuable lessons.
Rest easy my beautiful friend! I’ll see you in the flowers, I’ll watch you fly with the birds and I’ll feel you in the rays of sun!
Sending love and prayers to her family.

Our family is saddened by Graces passing, a wonderful angel now with the lord. I take peace in knowing she has arrived and is once again enjoying her loved ones that have gone before her…but in saying that know how hard it is for the ones left behind. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Grace left all of you, including myself, with precious memories that will be cherished for a life time.
I bet she is getting ready to plant her beautiful flowers.

Hello Faye
I only heard recently of your mother’s passing. I hope you and your family take comfort in the many, many fond memories you have of her.
I remember her as warm with a very subdued sense of humour. I remember her showing me some pickles in a small wooden barrel, and to be truthful I thought she was a little batty as I had never seen pickles done that way. She let me taste one and I immediately realized that she wasn’t batty- the pickle was delicious!!
Take care
