Wanda Jean Horton, 62, of Pleasantfield, Queens County, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at the Halifax Infirmary, after battling cancer for over 2 years. She faced this challenge with strength, courage and faith that helped her to have a positive outlook despite her circumstances. Born in Liverpool, NS, Wanda was the daughter of the late Bazil and Marguerite (Smith) Horton.
Wanda loved her job at Hillsview Acres Home for Special Care and loved caring for, and interacting with residents there. In spite of doing so later in life, she worked hard to become a certified CCA, and was proud to reach this goal. Wanda loved a good deal. Whether Frenchy’s, Value Village, or Marketplace, she knew how to sniff out a bargain and snag the good stuff. If she didn’t need it herself, she always had a friend in mind who could use a lightly used item. Above everything else, family and friends were the most important things to her. Those who knew her best, know how much she loved to talk…sometimes for hours. She cared very much for the people around her, and found strength from the love she received from her friends, some of whom were especially dear to her.
She is survived by her partner of 23 years, Gene Eaton; daughter, Crystal (Jonathan) Schenkels; son, Vincent Cheung; brother, Darren Horton (Bonnie MacDonald); and grandson, Cameron Schenkels, whom she especially loved and adored.
We would like to thank Dr. MacKinnon, Natalie Brooks (Palliative Care), the Halifax Oncology Unit, especially Dr. Rayson and Nurse, Megan, and all medical staff who helped guide Wanda through the past 2 years.
In keeping with Wanda’s wishes, there will be no funeral services held. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.chandlersfuneral.com for the Horton family.

This is certainly a very difficult time for everyone. I grew up with Wanda and had many play days together. She always had a smile whenever she saw you and was always ready for a chat to catch up. Wanda was a very positive person, no matter what life had dealt her, she aways had a smile and positive outcome right to the end. Crystal, I know this will hit you really hard, but I’m sure you have many happy memories of her. Keep them close to your heart and it will help heal all the sadness in time.
God Bless!
Take care.

To Gene, Crystal, Vincent and Families… To my dear friend Wanda….we grew up in the same neighborhood knowing each other but when you came to work at Hillsview we became very good friends…we shared so much laughter, tears, road trips, shopping, having each others backs at work and to just sit and listen to each other when we needed to vent…you had a ❤️ of gold and always put others first…like Crystal said you never passed by a Frenchies or Value Village with out going in and you always found great buys…I can still hear you at work…Corina and you save me some chicken pot pie, apple crisp, corn chowder or many other favourites on the menu…I am so glad i got to spend some time in the hospital with you and many phone calls recently…you were so brave and had a very optimistic outlook on your health issues…you have touched so many lives in your lifetime and I hope you are free from pain and suffering and walking the streets of gold doing what you loved most…looking for a frenchies or value village…when ever I enter one of these places I will always think of you and bring a smile to my face…Gene, Crystal and families…I am so sorry for your loss, and hope you take comfort in knowing Wanda is not suffering anymore…spread those wings Wanda and be Free…I will always cherish our good/bad times togetherX0

There are no words to take your heartache away. She was a very kind and loving person. I haven’t seen Wanda for awhile , but I am going to choose to remember her smiling face and the fun times we had in the big red barn. Your fight here is over my friend. Now you are free to do all the wonderful things that the our earthly existence denies us. You are fondly remembered and tucked safely into my heart. My deepest condolences to you all.

Sending my sincerest condolences to all of Wanda’s family at this difficult time. I was Wanda’s daily pen pal for most of the last 3 years, and will treasure the memories of the things we shared through our love of writing, for as long as I live. She really did have a heart of gold, and I will miss her letters, her wit and humour more than I can say. She has left a void that nobody else could fill.

To Wanda’s Family,
While working at Frenchy’s , Wanda was always a pleasure. When she and (more often than not) Janice walked in , you knew you were in for a good laugh. I was saddened to see this. May she continue to fly!
