The family of Richard Wilson Hatt are saddened by his passing in Queens Manor on May 22, 2023.
Born in Liverpool, Richard was a son of the late Arnold and Kathleen (Wolf) Hatt, the fourth oldest of six children.
Richard gave up his scholastic endeavors to work at his fathers newly built gas/service station, Arnold Hatt’s White Rose Station in 1961 with his younger brother David. This became the hub of the community gatherings and gossip. Everyone knew that he loved gossip. His nephew David, will need to take over those reigns! If you wanted to know something, go to the garage. They ran the business for many years. Eventually, his son, Chris, continued running the business with him as Hatt’s Shell with the utmost commitment to their patrons. Someone could call him at midnight in need of gas and he would provide that without complaint.
An exemplary pillar of the community, Richard was director of the Milton Community Association moving on to be president of MCA and Milton Days for 35 years. He thrived on running the Milton dances and partaking…. (neighbors can attest to this from the audible retching while hanging over the railing behind the garage and yes, he went to work on Sunday mornings!) This affliction was remedied with Peggy’s eggnog delivered by Chris and Kelly before heading off to Sunday school.
During his term with the Milton Community Association, he was one of the founding members of the Milton Centennial Pool and Milton Ball Park. Richard had no qualms discussing death and was not fearful of dying. No surprise he was “the man” who would find you a plot in the Milton Cemetery. He knew the “plot book” from cover to cover!
Needless to say, everyone referred to him as the “Mayor of Milton” as he drove around the loop doing his inspections. We jokingly said “Chandlers’ will have to put him in a casket with wheels and windows.”
Richard was Past Master of Prince of Wales Lodge #29 and served on committees filling most offices for 52 years. He was very passionate about “community” and “the garage” and the joke was he loved these as much as his family.
One of his greatest pleasures was being a grandfather. No surprise that when Ruby or Beth needed anything, he was at their beck and call to drive them. His generous heart and sarcasm will be deeply missed.
Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy (Veinot); his children Chris (Karen) and Kelly (Darren) and his beloved granddaughters Ruby and Beth. Step grandson Hayden Wamboldt. Siblings Jack (Nancy), Mary Sedran, David (Bonnie), Pam Crouse (Greg), many nieces and nephews and very special sister in law Leanne White (Stephen).
Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his sister Shirley Leslie.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool, NS. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in Milton Baptist Church, Milton, NS. Reverend Stephen Baker officiating. No flowers by request, donations may be made to the Milton Cemetery Fund. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com
The family wish to thank the staff of Queens Manor and Roseway Manor for their care of Richard and a special thank you to his nephew Ben Hatt.
“Take your last drive… It’s not the end of the road. It really is the circle of life just like the trip around the river.”
Offer Condolence for the family of Hatt; Richard Wilson

On a personal level Richard was always very helpful to me when I stopped in the garage. He also was a great mentor to me when it came to community service. He supported so many causes I am involved in without hesitation. He was a pillar of our community.
He loved seeing our boys as well. We will all miss him very much. Our prayers for peace in everyone’s hearts Deb ,Chris ,Angus and Lennon.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Richard’s passing. I’ve always liked him. He and his staff provided top-notch, professional service at reasonable rates. They were as honest as the day is long. I mentioned that to Richard once and he said, ” I wouldn’t feel right ripping anyone off.” When the garage was open on Saturdays and I had to come in for appointments he always asked me to bring Tim Horton’s coffee. I looked forward to my visits with him at Queens Manor when he would come out for the church services. He will be missed by tons of people. My condolences to all of you.

Dear Peggy, Chris and Kelly
We are both sad to hear of Richard’s passing, he was one of the first people we met when we bought our home in Milton 22 years ago. When we first started commuting here it was a seasonal residence, Richard put us on his daily or twice daily tour of Milton to make sure all was well. He was one of the first people to accept us into the community and we established a friendship that seemed it was much older than it was. It was hard to repay Richard for all his help but after a few years I found a way by helping Peggy with her Fish pond and he was grateful for the assistance (and often a pie from Peggy!). Our condolences to you and your families.
Danny&Diana Hirtle
Our deepest condolences to Peggy and all the family . Richard was definitely one a kind , his humour , sarcasm ,jokes and of course the local gossip . He will be greatly missed , especially in Milton where we would see him daily , whether at the garage or the store buying his daily tickets , always a great laugh . Rest in peace ole buddy .

Peggy and family, my sincere condolences, on the passing of Richard. I was shocked, to see his obituary. Two of the requests, Uncle Doug had of Aunt Margaret, was to drive him down past the family home, in Brooklyn and up to the garage, so he could see and talk to Richard. So they will have a lot of catching up to do. May God, walk beside you and the family, to give you all the strength, you all need, to heal.

So sorry to hear about Richard. Without question he had a long lasting impact on me and always made me feel like part of the Hatt Family. Richard hired me ay the Garage when I needed a job 2 different times and through his example I learned about custom service. That alone has served me well throughout my life and will be forever thankful. Another important lesson for automotive service was the fact that only a Torch and Wrecking Bar were needed for most repairs 🙂
Take care.

To: The Hatt Family,
An illness that requires two goodbyes is difficult. Richard’s body went on living but his mind could not keep up. Though, his illness wasn’t as long as his entire life lived.
Not too long ago, Kelly and I reminisced about Peggy and Carolanne loading Shane, Chris, Kelly and me in a car when we were younger to go on a road trip to locate the whereabouts of Nibby but on several occasions Richard and Nibby. To us, it was an adventure although I’m not sure if Peggy and Carolanne agreed. I remember Richard when I would pull up to his gas pump, “How’s ya Fatha and later What’s ya Matha been up to now?” Of course, he knew before he asked. He had his finger on the pulse of Milton and beyond. He’d sum up his advice to me in one sentence. It wasn’t until I thought about what he had said to me that I realized it was advice. I always appreciated the kindness he gave me.
He was a wise, introspective, charitable and witty man. A hardworking, down-to-earth ‘Hatt’ from Milton who loved his community, his family and his friends. There will never be another Richard Hatt, he was an original. I hadn’t seen him in the past few years but I always knew he was there. I will miss him.
Thinking of you all and sending my love.
Mike and Sandy Roy.

Your friends at the Milton Baptist Church
Dear Peggy, Kelly, Chris and family, On behalf of the Milton Baptist Church, we were so saddened when we heard of our dear friend, Richard’s, passing. Richard has been a huge part of our church family all of his life. He always sat in that special pew next to his Mom and Dad’s stained glass window. He was always ready to help us with any event that we held, either buying and selling tickets, putting up posters or helping out on committees. We will miss him greatly. We all have special memories of Richard which we will forever cherish. To Peggy and the family, we pray that God will be with you in this time of sorrow. May your wonderful memories sustain you during these coming days. Our love and condolences to you.

Dear Peggy, Kelly, Chris and family,
For several years I would look forward to my twice yearly tire change, knowing I would be in for a treat of enjoyable conversation with Richard, a bit of political banter and musings about the latest news in the Advance and the goings on around Town. When ever I had the chance traveling through I would gas up in Milton as he took pride in giving good costumer service, still pumping your gas when most places moved on to self service pumps. He was an all round good man. My sincere sympathy to you all.
Kathi Parlee
It’s hard to imagine a Milton without Richard. There aren’t many who have left such an impression on a community and beyond. Memories of him will be told and retold for many years. Sending our sincere condolences to all who loved him.

I am sorry for your loss.
Richart taught me Milton, cause we all know there ain’t no “d” in Richart in Milton.
As one of the many ‘young fellas’ to run the pumps over the years the impact that Richart had on all of us can’t be measured. He taught us to count back, to clean, to turn wrenches and to avoid detection on ‘ticket runs’ and the art of the scratch game card.
A friendship that spanned three decades and so many cars on hoists. Richart and the evening crew taught me the value of not just long friendships, but that friendship spans the years.
Carry all of your memories close to your heart and know Richard left his mark on so many like myself.
~Davey
