Ernst – Ruth Louise, age 77, of Liverpool passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023, at Ryan Hall in Bridgewater.
Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of the late C. Eric and Florence (Meisner) Manthorne.
Ruth attended Acadia University graduating with a Licentiate in Music and Bachelor of Music (Voice) in 1966. She was a member of the Acadia Chapel Choir, Winner of the Leslie Bell Memorial Choral Award and the City of Lincoln Trophy for supremacy in music festival competition on a national scale. As a member of the choir Ruth performed in the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 67.
Ruth began her teaching career at Gloosecap Elementary School in Canning then spent the following 12 years teaching at Liverpool Regional High. While there, she directed choirs each year, two musicals and developed a music program for the high school. In the early 1970’s she founded a singing group known as the Triple Trio. The group performed at various sites in Nova Scotia and in 1973 were selected to perform at the Canadian Music Educators Conference in Ottawa. The Liverpool Kinsmen Club sponsored LP of the Triple Trio’s music which can still be found in many homes throughout the county. Ruth retired to raise her children and later returned to teach part-time and substitute in a number of schools throughout Queens and Lunenburg Counties.
Ruth directed the Liverpool Baptist Choir for 16 years and mass choirs for several Kiwanis Christmas Concerts. She had private music students and coached numerous students for music festivals, music exams and university qualification. She was also a much sought after soloist at weddings and funerals in the community.
Ruth took up running in her later years and she and her friend Clare were well known for their early morning jogs around the community. Ruth ran a number of 5 km and 10 km road races and often won her age division. She was a strong supporter of the Terry Fox Foundation and was recognized for participating in all of their first 40 Terry Fox runs.
Ruth is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Charles “Chuck”; daughter, Kristen (Michael) Peace of Guelph, Ontario, son, Andrew (Davonna Juroe) of Seattle, Washington; sisters, Barbara DeLong, Carol (Colin) Horsley, both of Liverpool; six nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Robert DeLong and niece, Michele Ernst.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Service, Liverpool. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 11:00 AM, from the Liverpool United Baptist Church. Reverend Noah Lohnes and Reverend Dr. Harry Gardner officiating. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Queens General Hospital Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Terry Fox Foundation. To all of Ruth’s family,
Seeing that Ruth has passed, I am flooded with memories of this kind, talented, accomplished woman. As a young girl, I reflect on she and her family at church where her lovely voice so often graced our services. Ruth was my high school music teacher, and often helped me prepare for solos in the annual Music Festival. She went on to teach at least two of our sons as well. When I think of the countless children who were encouraged musically by this dedicated lady, and her wonderful contributions to the music programs in Queens County, I realize how very fortunate we all were to be blessed by Ruth’s devotion to her
community.
But, Ruth was most dedicated to you, her family. Please accept my deepest sympathy as you say goodbye.May wonderful memories bring you peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Deeply saddened to read Ruth’s obituary. She greatly enriched the deep pool of musical talent in our town and beyond for decades. As students in the middle 60’s we would attend evening services at the Manning Memorial Chapel just to hear the acapella Lord’s Prayer by the choir. We will always remember the fabulous Triple Trio, maybe one of her finest accomplishments. Our wishes for peace and comfort go to Chuck and his family as you grieve the loss of your wife and mother.

Chuck, Andrew, Kristen, Barbara, Carol and family,
We were saddened to learn of the death of Ruth. We remember how she demonstrated excellence in singing and in teaching voice. Her investment in her students leaves a living legacy of the joy of music. Our son remembers her influence as his music teacher in grades five and six.
We recall how Ruth combined her musical gift and training with her Christian faith. She used her voice to contribute to Sunday worship. In our mind’s eye we can see her singing with the choir of the Liverpool Baptist Church, as well as directing the church choir so that others could enter into worship. Ruth approached this ministry to bring out the best in the choir members and to bring glory to God.
We are grateful for Ruth’s Christian faith, her love of family, her generosity of spirit and her willingness to laugh, even at herself.
“Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs….For the LORD is good and his love endures forever…” Psalm 100:2,5

Chuck and Family, I was shocked and deeply saddened to read of Ruth’s passing. We were at Acadia University together and she was so full of vitality and musical energy. She kept “the Barn” overflowing with her singing and liveliness! I was thrilled to hear her choirs perform at Church Events . She was such a gifted director and created memorable musical experiences for so many.. While she was teaching music at Dr. Wickwire Elementary and i was supervising student teachers for N.S.T.C. and Acadia Ed., we stayed connected and spent time in her classroom doing ‘catch up’. As devastated as we all are, let us remember the smiling, the laughing, the talking, the singing–the good times. May Grace and Peace be with you all.

Dear Chuck and family,
I am so saddened to read that Ruth has passed away. Ruth was a wonderful person, who always had a kind heart and an encouraging word for all. Her gentle spirit and her warm personality meant more than she could have ever realized, to those of us who were struggling to find our way, during our HIgh-School years.
When you lose your life partner after being together for so many years, there is much to reflect back on. Think of all of the happy times that you spent with Ruth, and treasure them always. Right now, you are no doubt wondering how you will be able to go on without her, but Ruth’s suffering is over and she would want you to lean on your faith, and your friends.
Ruth wouldn’t want you to try to go through this alone. She would want the family that she loved so much to share memories with one another and not be afraid to laugh if some of them are funny. God won’t be offended, and Ruth will be laughing along with you.
My love and prayers are with you, as you work through this very sad time in your life, Chuck. Ruth will be waiting for you, when the time comes for God to call you Home. In the meantime, keep your trust in the God that we serve and allow HIm to help you get through all of this.
With my most sincere condolences,

To Chuck, Carol, and Family, my sincere condolences on Ruth’s passing. She was a talented teacher and musician. I enjoyed Glee Club for several years under her tutelag and of course, who could ever forget the fabulous “Triple Trio”! Ruth really put Liverpool on the map with that group. She was such a vivacious and attractive person. I will never forget her.

Dear Chuck and family. So sorry to be late in responding to this sad news. Ruth was a wonderful colleague in the business of music education in the Liverpool area for a long time. We first met at Summer School in the early 1970’s and many are the wonderful memories of those days. Whether on the personal or group level, Ruth provided really great musical training at LRHS, Liverpool Baptist Church and school and community choirs. Thanks, Chuck, for allowing us to share Ruth’s talents. May you and the rest of the family find strength in these condolences and the friendships of Queens community. Sincere best wishes, Terry & Stephanie Hurrell,
Randi Dickie

Dear Chuck, Andrew, Kristen, and Family, my heart goes out to you as you grieve. I remember Ruth both from Acadia and from Liverpool: her lively personality, her laugh, the thrill of becoming a parent, and her delight in sharing her own musical talents and her gift for teaching and directing others. The sparkle of her personality in the world she inhabited will be remembered fondly by many for a very long time.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

To Ruth’s family,
Ruth was my voice teacher all through high school. I owe so much to her. She taught me how to use my voice in ways I didn’t;t know I had in me. One of my fondest memories is she and Mr Ernst arguing over my voice lesson schedule interfering with basketball practice…it was all in good fun, and I made it work. She was such a sweet and beautiful lady, with a gentle way of teaching. I am so sorry that she has been taken away so soon. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
Sincerely, Heather (Veinot) Stevens

To Chuck, Andrew, Kristen and families
Please accept my deepest condolences. Ruth was my music teacher at LRHS and she shared her love of music very successfully! She taught with enthusiasm and patience. She always seemed to be smiling. And she supported many in their musical endeavours. Ruth also shared her talents with the community and we all benefitted from her leadership. May you all find peace and comfort in knowing that the community shares your grief in her passing. RIP Ruth.
