Muriel Genevieve Douglas (Swindell) passed away peacefully on October 9, 2020, at Harbour View Haven in Lunenburg.
Muriel was born August 2, 1924 in Harbourville, NS, to parents Clifford and Genevieve Swindell, and lived most of her youth in Berwick.
She married Nelson Foster Douglas (d.1992) in 1948. They lived in Caledonia and had three children: Audrey Lee Bennett of Mississauga (wife of Donald Bennett, d. 2012), Blair Douglas (d. 2018, husband of Jean) of Caledonia, and Karen Mary (d.1961). She is survived by her daughter Audrey Lee, grandsons John Douglas and Jeffrey and wife Dominique Douglas, and Adam Bennett and wife Laura, and great grandchildren Luke Douglas, Chelsea and Alexis Ewer, sister- in-law Elizabeth Douglas Ross of Harmony, brother-in-law David Misner of Kentville, and numerous nieces and nephews. Siblings Lawrence Swindell, Lloyd Swindell, Audrey Bligh and Eleanor Misner are deceased.
Muriel graduated from Berwick High School and attended a business course in Kentville, NS, and worked as bookkeeper at the Creamery in Berwick until her marriage. After marriage, she became active in the community of Caledonia while caring for her three children. For many years Muriel also worked on the family business, N. F. Douglas & C., Ltd. She played tennis and badminton, bridge and enjoyed handcrafts, while maintaining an active social life. They hosted many good times with friends at Pinehurst in South Brookfield. Muriel and Nelson made many friends through their association with the Maritime Lumber Bureau. In the early 1970’s they began an annual vacation in Florida, which Muriel continued for many years. She loved to travel, sightsee and meet new friends. Some high points of travelling included cruises to Hawaii, Alaska and through the Panama Canal.
In 2008, Muriel moved to an apartment at Drumlin Hills in Brigdewater, and in 2017 to the Bridgewater Retirement Centre (Ridgewood). Failing health necessitated a lengthy stay in hospital in 2019 until transfer to Harbour View Haven in January 2020. She remained there until her death on October 9, 2020. The family extends sincere appreciation to all of the caregivers who assisted Mom as her health declined.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool.
A celebration of life for Muriel will be held Monday, August 2, 2021 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the North Queens Fire Hall, Caledonia. Please respect COVID precautions by bringing a mask, practice social distancing and providing contact tracing information. Donations are appreciated to the North Queens Fire Association, North Queens Community Health Centre, or to the charitable organization of your choice. I remember Muriel Douglas as far back as the 1950’s, when I visited N. F. Douglas Store with my parents. In later life, she always made time for a conversation when I visited from Newfoundland and Labrador. North Queens is a better place for having had Muriel Douglas play the role that she did. Our deepest sympathy to Audrey Lee and all members of the family.
