Garnet Eugene Delong

DeLong; Garnet Eugene,  age 68, of Albany New, Queens County passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at home.
Born in Caledonia, Garnet was a son of the late Allister and Jean (Zwicker) DeLong.
Garnet had an incredible work ethic and spent all of his working life as a truck driver. He worked for Van Dyk’s Trucking and for the Department of Transportation in the winters. Garnet was lovingly known as a bit of a neat freak with his trucks, often joking that you had to take your boots off before entering the cab. He was a lifelong jack of all trades, always busy fixing, creating or remodeling things. Garnet did not know the meaning of the word can’t. He truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures such as hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, watching sports and especially summers at the river with his family. Garnet was an active volunteer in the community throughout his lifetime having served many years as president of the North Queens Credit Union and he was also a long time member of the North Queens Fire Department. Garnet’s life was always about his family, whom he loved dearly. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
Garnet is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; daughter, Jennifer (Jamie) Freeman; son, Michael DeLong; grandchildren, Karlee and Laci Freeman; step grandchildren, Issiah and Amelia Smith; brothers, Dwight (Margaret) of Greens Harbour, Newfoundland, Terrance (Sheila DeLong) of Kempt; mother-in-law, Isabel Sutherland; sisters-in-law, Margaret Weare, Christine (Donnie) Hyson, Cathy Merry (Leigh); brothers-in-law, Bobby (Wilda) Sutherland, Peter Sutherland; many nieces and nephews.
Garnet was predeceased by a brother, Clarke.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. At Garnet’s request there will be no funeral service. Donations may be made to the local food bank or to a charity of your choice. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.chandlersfuneral.com
