Crouse; Elizabeth Jean, age 90, formerly of West Berlin, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital on Wednesday August 30, 2023, with family by her side in her final days.
“Betty” was a devoted mother and grandmother, full of love and compassion for her family, friends and community. When anyone was feeling down or dealing with a loss, Mom’s first thought was to bake for them and provide comfort in the best way she knew how. Many families in the community will remember Mom’s ginger cookies, pies, squares, and hot milk cakes; sure to have sampled a few over the years. Nanny was beaming with pride knowing many of her recipes are being carried on through her granddaughter.
Many years ago, Mom, combining her love of baking and community, baked as a way to fundraise for the materials needed to improve the St. John’s Anglican Cemetery in West Berlin. She spent many long days happily working away and expanding the area to what it is today. She will take her final rest there alongside family lost to her far too early.
Mom worked tirelessly in her flower gardens, often seen out in her yard from daylight to dark. For a little lady, she managed to do a tremendous amount of hard physical work, caring for her property until just a few months shy of her 89th birthday, at which time she moved to Hillsview Acres. After a life of hard work, it’s time for her to rest.
Elizabeth is survived by her son Bradford of West Berlin and daughter Lynn (Jeff Parks) of Lewis Lake, grandchildren Robert, David, Kevin and Bryden Crouse, Liam and Lauren Parks, step-granddaughter Hailey Langille, great-grandchildren Olivia and Madison Crouse, Riley Whynot and Kale Langille.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her son Dwight, daughter-in-law Sarah and grandson Jacob.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. At Elizabeth’s request, there will be no public funeral service, but a private family graveside service will be held at a later date. No flowers; donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com
The family would like to thank the staff of Hillsview Acres for the wonderful care that Elizabeth received during these past two years. Mom spoke highly of all the staff and appreciated all that they did for her.

Betty, I guess God must have finally found a place for you. Whenever I would say, there’s bears here at the cemetery, lock your doors, go inside before dark, you would just laugh and say God was not ready for you yet. Heaven sure will have a beautiful garden now and whoever is doing the baking had better make room. I hope you are at peace now and baking up a storm and planting all of your favorite flowers. Sincere sympathy to the family.

Over the years, we have had many interactions with Betty. She regularly came to see us at Nana’s house on Eastern Shore Road and at our family home in Dartmouth. We often stopped by her house in West Berlin to return containers for her next batch of baking. Sweet lady in more ways than one. The world has lost one of the good ones. Rest in peace Betty.
