Corbett; Clyde William, age 93, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, on Friday, July 7th, 2017.

Born in New Britain, Connecticut, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Lorena (McNutt) Corbett.

He graduated from the Provincial Normal College Truro and worked at the Brookfield Creamery during summers while attending college. He happily taught Industrial Arts in Liverpool Regional High for most of his teaching career. He married Barbara Dauphinee a few years after moving to Liverpool. In their early years the popular couple developed a passion for music and enjoyed  the local dances. One of Clyde’s many sayings “OH Mother I Can’t Dance” was apparently true spending numerous hours coaching her son. Clyde developed a deep love for the outdoors at an early age while living in Truro. After school and weekends he and his friends would head to their hunting camp behind the Truro Reservoir. Like most kids they worked in the community to do whatever was needed to make extra money. Eventually Clyde saved enough to buy a used 30-30 Winchester rifle at the local hardware store. I can just imagine the joy he and his friends had back then. During the depression the family rented their Truro home and moved to Port Lorne while his father worked in New Britain Connecticut at The Stanley Works. Those three years living on the Bay of Fundy during tough times had a huge influence in his life. Money was tight and everyone had daily chores. He never shied from work even in his later years. He and his father built the house he lived in and most of the furniture. He also built his cottage on Ponhook Lake including all the windows and doors. Clyde was a man who enjoyed people! During his career as a teacher he was known for his stories along with his abilities as an instructor. His former students would comment how they were influenced by Mr. Corbett. Clyde operated Corbett’s Gun and Tackle from 1958 and continued until last year, the best he could given his health. He was an accomplished Gunsmith, excellent Marksman and fly fisherman. He gave to his community and was one of the founding members of several organizations including being President of Queens County Fish and Game for several years, The Hollow Log Rifle and Pistol Club and the Liverpool Curling Club. He was appointed by the Nova Scotia Government to a special wildlife management committee to develop guidelines for managing wildlife in the province. That and his long involvement in wildlife issues in the province led to him receiving the Nova Scotia Environmental Award in 1985. During his business career he operated one of the leading Sports Stores on the South Shore selling highly respected product lines like Honda, Johnson Outboards, Husqvarna and was the first to stock products like Spin Cast rods and reels, snowmobiles and the famous Honda Cub. Those were the days “You Met the Nicest People on a Honda” When Bass started to populate our waters Clyde embraced the opportunity of a summer sport fishing and loved attending South Shore Bassmasters Club tournaments until recent years. He was a very rounded person and enjoyed life to the fullest.

He is survived by his sons, Ian (Shauna) and Gary (Karen), both of Greenfield.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara.

A Celebration of Clyde’s Life for family and close friends will be held at a later date. No flowers by request, donations can be made to the Queens General Hospital Foundation. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.chandlersfuneral.com

Condolence from Jeff Miller on July 8th, 2017 4:54 pm

It is always hard when we say “Good Bye” but he lived the fullest life that I am sure anyone could have! I hope I can say the same when I am 93!! He sold me the fishing reel I use to this day!! I still ride the Motorcycle I purchased from Corbett’s!
I taught his son. I know he had a “Special” last year as I followed his Journey on FACEBOOK! He would be probably saying,”What is that nonsense!” Good on you Ian!!

Ian, Shauna and family, I am truly saddened to hear about Mr. Corbett’s passing. I always enjoyed chatting with him whenever I managed to get home for a visit. I remember he gave me my first summer job painting his house, and cutting the grass and whatever other odd jobs needed doing.

He was swift to tell me that I worked for him ! Not Ian not Shauna Bo or byron lol….although that didn’t last long. I remember going fishing with him a few times at 10 mile lake and doing some work at his cabin aswell.

I always respected Mr. Corbett, there was no better way it seemed to brighten his day then to start a story about fishing or hunting. He always had a story to share, and was a well liked and respected member of the community. I always thought a lot of him. Again I’m so sorry for your loss at this difficult time.

Clyde was a great friend, teacher and brother Mason. Highly regarded by his peers and students, Clyde and Barb established a family business that became “the go to” place for all things outdoors. A superb raconteur Clyde shared great stories and, unlike some fishermen, Clyde’s were all true. In later years we enjoyed his friendship as a Transcotia regular. He leaves us with so many fond memories.

Gary, Karen, Ian, Shauna:

We are so sorry to hear of Clyde`s passing. On many occasions we reminisced about the best fishing and hunting trips, when trout and deer were plentiful. Clyde`s memory was vivid and accurate. He gave so much to support local recreation, more than many are aware. Clyde volunteered on numerous associations, including the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters, and made a noticeable difference towards their past success. We all share great memories of Clyde, and they will continue. Our lives are certainly improved due to Clyde`s efforts, and he will be missed.

Met Clyde for the first time at the Regional High School.Whenever one of us “young fellows” would get a bit out of hand he would put us in our place by doing one leg squats and challenging us to do the same, very few could!Met him in the park by the Legion 9 years ago when walking with my son who was quite amazed I had a teacher still alive,Clyde regaled him with his stories for over 1/2 hour and when we left my son said “is there anything that guy DIDN’T do?”I admired him each time I saw him at a dance,he always danced as much as he could and when leaving always said “that was fun”.May we all take a final lesson from him and live life to the fullest and be able to say “That was fun”!My condolences to the family and Clyde, you will be missed by many.

Condolence from Blair C. Smith & Michelle Dort Smith on August 4th, 2017 2:24 pm

Your father was one of a kind. As a child, I remember going in the store with my father C.Murray Smith opening the door and seeing all the cool stuff as the bell on the door rang, Clyde would be behind the counter talking and telling a story to a client. He told it as if you were there with him in his journeys.
Clyde was the man to see about anything related to hunting and fishing and outdoor atv etc. He was the guy with all the experience. Going to the store was always a joyful time in my life growing up.
I didn’t have him in high school at LRHS, but heard about him lots from his friend Mr. Redmond. In this day of age, Clyde will be dearly missed. There are not many of the originals left anymore, but I say this… enjoy your life, taste the water from a spring deep in the forest, explore new areas, try some gun practice, and finally go buy a 3 wheeler. When you experience all of this, think of Clyde.
That’s how he would live his life and he sure had a good one! Raise a beer in memory of Clyde. Cheers

Condolence from Grrg Foisie on July 30th, 2018 1:28 pm

Clyde was a wonderful friend to our family. I really miss him.
