My parents, Vernon and Ardath Zwicker, would come to stay at Bernard Zwicker’s up the road in August. I have fond memories of visiting Erma’s place when Wendy and I were friends as children, although Neal, Shelly, and Blake were also in the mix of playmates as well. The younger kids were part of the picture if I was at their place.
I remember Erma as always being in the kitchen, cooking up something or taking care of a baby. But sometimes she’d be taking a well deserved coffee/tea break. Despite how busy she was, Erma was never too busy to chat with me, a little girl who liked to talk and ask questions. Her backyard was a fun playground of naturally occurring boulders and trees-a great place for hide and seek and outdoor play. I always felt welcomed there.
She will always be alive in my memory, as will all her children, from Neal down to the youngest. May she Rest In Peace after a life well lived. Julia Zwicker Trachsel, Victoria, BC

I have many beautiful memories of visits to Aunt Erma throughout my life.
Afternoons spent outside her house soaking up the sun. Family picnics at Beach Meadows beach or on the Wentzell lawn.
Many afternoons filled with gossip and tall tales as we walked around Church Square then over the Mill Village bridge and escaping to the tranquilitý of the Mill Village East Road to circle back upon ourselves. Not only did she do this walk with myself but she also walked it with my mother when she was still alive and I know she walked with others and her daughter Shelly in later years. Aunt Erma was always a lady on the go. She liked to go out to teas with her circle of Charleston gals and spend sunny afternoons at Beach Meadows Beach with my mom walking the beach looking for shells and enjoying the salt air .
When my mom died we were both feeling that loss and Aunt Erma was there to put her arms around me and comfort me in my sorrow and I in turn comforted her. I loved her very much. Rest in peace dear Aunt Erma you will be remembered fondly. Love your niece Wanda

We are so sorry to read of your Mom’s passing… Alzheimers is so difficult to deal with as the loved one loses a bit of themselves each day and the memories of all they held dear. We were very grateful to live across the street and have frequent visits with your Mom… even if some came in the middle of the night … we loved her stories. Our deepend condolences to you all.

Erma Conrad was a force of nature, a woman in charge of her house and her kids and a most welcoming soul to all who entered her home. I know because I was lucky enough to one of those people who found themselves in Erma’s home many, many times as a kid growing up in the Village. Erma, and the entire Conrad clan, were very kind to this young, somewhat shy new boy in the Village and that meant more to me that I can explain even today. I looked up to Erma as someone to respect and admire because I couldn’t figure out how she did it all, so whatever magic she had was indeed something special. As time went by and when I would come home to visit my parents, I always remember seeing Erma out on her religious daily walks looking very healthy and happy. In fact, come to think of it, I can only remember her as being happy. Reid and I have spoken over these past few years of Erma’s declining health and I know her condition must have been very hard for all her children and close friends to witness. My wish is that we only remember Erma in her healthy and happy days and celebrate her life in doing so. My sincere condolences to Erma’s family. I miss the Village and the days of my youth with Erma and all of you.
