Conrad; Borden Loraine, Q.C.

Posted By Obits On February 3, 2021 @ 4:59 pm In Obituaries | 105 Comments

Borden L. Conrad, Q.C., 72, of West Berlin, Queens County, died Friday, January 29th, 2021, at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, Queens County, N.S., of Statin-Induced Myopathy.

He was born in West Berlin on August 6th, 1948, the only son of the late William L. Conrad and Lalia M. Conrad (née Wolf). He was predeceased by his older sister Maxine M. Hill  (née Conrad) of Windsor, Nova Scotia. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, (Margaret) Christine Conrad (née Cole) and two sons, Hayes W. Conrad and Nathaniel I.W. Conrad, both of Eagle Head.

He graduated with a B.A. from the University of King’s College, Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1969, and an LLB from Dalhousie University Law School in 1971.  Additionally, he received his B.Ed. from Dalhousie University in 1979.

He was called to the Bar on February 4th, 1972, and took up practice in Bridgewater, N.S., later expanding, with his partner, Thomas J. Feindel, to a second office in Liverpool, N.S., where, until recently, he continued his practice under the name Conrad & Feindel.

He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988.

He was a passionate supporter of his parish, his community, the Anglican church, his family and friends. He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Eagle Head, Nova Scotia, where he provided lay leadership, served on the parish vestry, and was a founding member of the book club. He also served as church historian, authoring the book So Great a Cloud of Witnesses. His faith was of deep importance to him and unwaveringly supported him through to the end.

He will be remembered as much for his warmth, humour, kindness and laugh as for his extensive knowledge encompassing, among other things, the law, genealogy, and local history.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chandler’s Funeral Home. Condolences may be made at www.chandlersfuneral.com.   A private burial service will be conducted by The Rev. Cherry Workman, at Saint John the Evangelist Church Cemetery, West Berlin, N.S.

Due to Covid restrictions, a funeral service will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Woodford and the caring staff at Queens General Hospital.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John Anglican Church., Eagle Head, N.S., or the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund.

His knowledge of our ancestry will never be duplicated by anyone and for all the times he passed this on to his extended family will always be appreciated. HIs kindness to me especially was always appreciated and I will hold his warm embrace on Christmas Eve close to my heart for the rest of my life. We know Borden’s love for his family will be a pathway forward for you and the many happy memories he shared with you will hopefully ease your grief now and in the days ahead. Condolence from Celeste Johnston on February 3rd, 2021 8:39 pm

Although I knew Borden for many years from the time he was our lawyer when we bought land here, I got to know him well over the past three years when I went in the church Council. He was a wonderful mentor to me, explained things in detail, and added occasional wonderful humour to our meetings. A most devout man. We will miss him sorely throughout the parish. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

I will always remember how he welcomed my young grandchildren ( no matter how active or noisey they were) to our services.

Condolence from Anne and Allan Laws, Calvin Whynot on February 3rd, 2021 9:23 pm

Christine, Hayes and Nathaniel, we are so very sorry to learn of Borden’s passing. Our mother, Shirley Whynot, had Conrad roots and loved that she and Borden were related and could talk about the family history. They saw each other at church regularly until Mom’s passing in 2015. After that, Borden always spoke so lovingly of Mom whenever we would see him. He had a kindness for family and the elderly which was so endearing. At this difficult time, know that our sympathy is with you and that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Condolence from Kathy & Tim Whynot on February 4th, 2021 8:41 am

Hayes, Nathaniel and Christine I was sad to hear of Borden’s passing. I have many fond memories of him and always enjoyed our conversation. He will be greatly missed. When I did my grandfather’s eulogy he loved the poem that I wrote and asked for a copy of it. So I send this alone to him, knowing that he is in a better place where he is wrapped in love.

I am Sixteen,
In my soul, I am forever young.
The wrinkles of time a mask.
My aching joints, just a facade,
A trick, a lark, a joke.

I am Sixteen,
With the wisdom, of all my years
With the knowledge of how it is to grow old.
But I am still sixteen.

I am Sixteen,
With so much more to do in this life,
So much more of the world to explore,
So many adventures left to have,

I am sixteen.
Right down to my very core.
I feel alive, like anything is possible.
But I am an old man.

I am an old man,
Who has led a full life.
I have loved many, been loved by many,
Had many adventures, many joys.

My soul is now free.
I am now forever sixteen.

Dear Christine, my heart goes out to you, and to Hayes and Nathaniel.
To lose such a fine man, is a great loss indeed.
Borden was such a charming fellow, always so interesting, and interested.
It was alway so evident to me how much he loved you, Christine.
It was also clear how much he cared and treasured, both his sons.
I was also so impressed that Borden raised cattle.
And him being a lawyer, and a Queens Counsel at that.
An impressive and unique man.
Please accept our sincere sympathy.
May his memory always be a blessing.
Sending love.

Dear Christine and Family
Please accept our deepest condolences for your tragic loss. We live in England so I haven’t seen Borden for some time but I have the most vivid memories of lively Boxing Day parties in Mahone Bay and fabulously hospitable evenings spent in your home. Borden is unforgettable – filled with a huge zest for life, an unrivalled sense of humour, warmth and an infectious joie de vivre. He combined these lovely qualities with a true sensitivity, sense of compassion and great kindness.
He was a lovely, lovely man and you must all miss him dreadfully. May he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him. Love from Susie Mendel and Nick Fishwick

Condolence from Yorke Tutty on February 4th, 2021 3:21 pm

Christine, Hayes and Nathaniel,

I am so sorry for your loss. Queens and Lunenburg Counties have lost a dedicated lawyer
and historian. His recollections of local families and their origins and interrelationships, were
truly amazing. Borden’s knowledge and appreciation of the law respecting land conveyancing
in rural Nova Scotia were perhaps without equal.
His contributions are chronicled in the public Land Registry, and will live on.

Vicki and I extend our condolences to Borden’s family. My fondest memory of Borden: When he first joined me in the practice of law we attended a dance at LaHave RiverYacht Club. I was amazed when this serious and competent young barrister stepped onto the dance floor where the joy, exuberance and vitality of his dancing made a major contribution to the enjoyment of everyone in attendance. I greatly appreciated his professionalism while we worked together as law partners but, upon remembering him, my thoughts turn to the moment that revealed this other Borden.

My Dad, Milton Rayner, always loved to hear Borden’s accounts of Queen’s County history and my Mum, Rosslyn, fondly recalls lobster meals prepared in his special way. Borden was a gifted raconteur and supporter of local history and the arts. We remember him fondly for his love of the land and preservation of the old ways of life.

Condolence from Becca Strople on February 8th, 2021 1:13 pm

So very sad to hear of your sudden loss (and ours). Borden and my brother Stephen were at Kings together and I met him when I got there 2 years later.

He has been my lawyer all these years and many wonderful hours were spent on unrelated topics and in good conversations about our families and many common interests
( especially the Anglican Church).

He had a wonderful laugh and sense of the ridiculous and always was authentically interested and thoughtful with his good advice.

He will be missed tremendously.

Condolence from Marcia and Craig Harding on February 11th, 2021 5:34 pm

Christine, Nathanial and Hayes. So sorry to hear of Borden’s passing.

Borden always had a friendly smile, from the days we knew him in High School to his long and successful career as a lawyer. We did not see him often but when we did we always had that wonderful kind of conversation you have when you meet an old friend you have not seen for awhile.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Condolence from Shirley Dagley on April 20th, 2021 6:24 pm

My husband, Roy and I visited with you when you visited with “Grannie” Troyer. Borden was my champion in high school as I was so homesick and Borden would say kind words to anyone who was being stressed.
We have not seen you for years and so I was shocked when I heard the news. The last time I saw Borden was when he was serving at the supper in Brooklyn. always kind Shirley and Roy Dagley, Voglers Cove

Condolence from Art Pinkerton & Valerie Angeloro on August 26th, 2021 4:24 pm

Just found out about Borden’s passing. Being in the US, we are out of touch.
Borden was our lawyer and friend. We had good legal services and many interesting conversations. It was especially nice that he came to our very small wedding at our cottage.
We will miss him.

My sincere condolences to Christine, Nathaniel, and Hayes. It was a pleasure working for Borden. I often think back on my time with Conrad and Feindel with fondness. It was an honour to work for, and learn from, such a well respected and funny person.

Hello Christine,
I am so sorry to hear about Borden’s death, late though my condolences are. We had such fun at your house, noisy, argumentative lobster dinners, always a pot of soup on the stove, a warm welcome and a comfy overnight stay. You will have been a widow for over a year now: I hope it isn’t as strange for you. Simon and I have been in Victoria for many years: we just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. We have 3 children, Henry, Alexandra and Emily, and a 10-month old grandson, Beau. They all live close by, so we are fortunate to see them often. I hope you are well.
