Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Edith Mae (Uhlman) Ball went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, October 1st, after a short stay at Valley Regional Hospital. Born on August 25th, 1925 to Joseph and Estella (Baker) Uhlman, she entered the world on a Wednesday at home on the farm. The homestead in New Elm was already home to 10 Uhlman children, with 3 more yet to come. 97 years of life; the impressiveness of her longevity is only surpassed by how she lived each of those days. She counted her blessings, family always being number one, and always took the time to talk with God.
Edith’s lifelong, loyal commitment to family and her strong work ethic were deeply influenced by her upbringing. She had a passionate love and admiration for her “Mama” who she spoke of so often. Family dinners, a tradition of “home” were something she cherished and passed on to her family.
She met Harry when she was 18 when he came calling to the family farm. 18 years her senior, they married in June of ‘45 and moved to their own farm in Hibernia. That beautiful property went on to nourish their family for the next 58 years. They went on to have the “rich man’s family” – a son, Wilbert in ‘48 and daughter, Rosemary in ‘50.
Edith had a multitude of hobbies over the years. She ever so modestly excelled at them all. She poured endless amounts love and attention into her flower beds and gardens, worked tirelessly on the family farm, kept an immaculate home, made cakes, cookies and rolls that would be the envy of any bake shop and could create anything, ANYTHING with her hands – crocheting, weaving, tatting, and sewing, are just a few of the areas in which she was skilled. She attended to these tasks as she did everything in life, with tender delicacy, love, and commitment. Her attention to detail was something to behold.
Edith’s unwavering faith in God inspired and influenced so many. She believed in the power of prayer and found daily comfort in reading scripture, hymns, and devotionals. Her natural worrying instincts were calmed by her ability to pray and give it to the Lord.
She was so grateful to have spent the last 18 years at home with some of her family, on the farm in Woodville. She was not but 5kms away from all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A blessing for all to have her so close. Her eyes would instantly light up when they entered the room, always greeting them with a hug and a kiss; always parting with “I love you, dear child.”
Edith will forever be missed by her children; Wilbert (Nancy) Ball, White Point ; Rosemary Jones, Woodville; her grandchildren Blair (Kelley) Ball, Cambridge; Rae-Anne (Anthony) Ward, Coldbrook; Carys (Adam) Palmer, Grafton; great-grandchildren, Cody Ball, Kamryn, Jordyn, Brooks and Layne Ward, Ryley and Lily Palmer; sister, Florence Uhlman and brother, Avery Uhlman.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harry; son-in-law, Richard Jones and 11 siblings, Wilbert, Muriel, Lottie, George, Winnie, Max, Wade, Lucy, Robert, Albert and Martin.
A celebration of life will be held at Chandlers’ Funeral Services in Liverpool Friday, October 7th, 11:00am, reception to follow. Interment to follow at the Highland Cemetery, Caledonia. Donations in memory can be made to the Woodville Baptist Church or the Victorian Order of Nurses. Online condolences may be made to www.chandlersfuneral.com
