ADAMS (Freeman) – Shirley Mae, of Greenfield, Queens County (formerly of Spryfield), passed away suddenly on Monday, March 1st, 2021, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.
Born in Greenfield, she was a daughter of the late Harley and Alice (Wentzell) Freeman.
Shirley worked as a bank teller and a school teacher for a short period, but her most loved and dedicated time was spent raising her two boys. She was a wonderful mother, who always put her boys first and tremendously enjoyed their every accomplishment. She and her husband, Doug, did everything together, from raising their boys to travelling the world.
The family lived in Spryfield for many years, where Shirley made many friends. Shirley was a very kind and caring woman, who had a great sense of humour and positive outlook on life. In her later years, she and Doug moved back to Greenfield, where Shirley was very active in the local church, fire fighters’ ladies auxiliary, Jolly Ponoquers Seniors’ Club and the Spryfield Lioness Club. She treasured time spent with her sons and grandchildren. She and Doug often cooked large meals together to celebrate any occasion in order to bring her family and friends together. You would never leave Shirley’s home without some of her famous cookies, pies or brownies. She always looked forward to her daily phone call from her son, Stephen. Shirley was also very close to her sisters’ families, and visited with them often. She had many friends in the community with whom she enjoyed spending time.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Doug, her son Stephen (Colleen), as well as her grandchildren, David and Amanda, and her step-grandchildren, Alanah and Matt.
Shirley was predeceased by her son, Tim; sisters, Freda Theakston, Marilyn Munroe and a brother, Melvin Freeman.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 6th, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., from Pine Rest Cemetery, Greenfield. Reverend Janet Baker officiating. No flowers by request, donations may be made to the Greenfield United Baptist Church or the Greenfield District Fire Department. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.chandlersfuneral.com
The family would like to send a special thank you to Jamie Theakston, Jennifer and Andrew Moir for their help and kindness.

Shirley and her sisters were our neighbours in Spryfield and I remember the many Tupperware and other parties we had at Shirley’s. I remember her mini pizza hors d’ouevres. Marilyn lived next door to us. We moved away from Spryfield when Shirley’s boys were young and what a surprise seeing the girls out at a tea and sale in Greenfield. It seemed like it was yesterday I had last spoken to them and it was great to see them again. Gerald taught the boys in school if I recall and I knew Stephen when he came calling to the hospital etc. So sorry for Doug, Stephen and family. She was a special lady.
Kim Bishop
I have many wonderful memories of Aunt Shirley. She was always smiling! One of the best bakers and quilters and an ardent Jays fan! Uncle Doug and Stephen our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love Kim
Gail and Dan Avery
Doug and Stephen, so extremely sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. My husband Dan and I knew Doug and Shirley many years ago when we were just married. At that time we lived on Thornhill Dr and we bowled together on the same league. I remember many many laughs with Doug and Shirley and had the pleasure of visiting your home and hearing about their boys. When I was expecting and was as big as a house and swollen it was Shirley who insisted that I call my Dr…sure enough she was right and I ended up in the hospital 3 weeks early. Such a wonderful and caring lady. It was wonderful being young and knowing such lovely people.

The greatest achievement of our lives is the raising of the next generation. The quality of the character of the person that we raise is a reflection of our own imprint that we leave in this world. Steve, you are a good man and I did not know your mother; however, I know through you that she must have been an awesome person. My own personal faith and beliefs prove to me that none of our lives are by chance, we were made and gifted to our parents. You were hers, find comfort from His words as He spoke on the mount “Blesses are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”.
