LINGLEY – Margaret Gertrude “Gert”, 78 of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital on Saturday, December 2, 2017.
Born in Milton, Gert was a daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel (McCoomb) Manthorne.
Gert was co-owner and operator, along with her late husband Philip, of West End Grocery for 22 years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Mersey Branch #038, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool. Gert will be lovingly remembered by her family, her friends and all who knew her through her years at the store.
She is survived by her son Tony, of Liverpool; her granddaughter, her sisters Dorinda White of Liverpool, Ellen (Vincent) Nowe, of Milton.
Besides her husband, Philip, Gert was predeceased by her daughters Wendy and Wanda; her son Terry “Scotty”; her sisters Alice Teal, Dolly Fancy and June Metzger; her brothers Fred, Roger, William and Allan.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery, College Street, Liverpool. Father Charles Offor officiating. Gert will be fondly remembered. She was a kind and good humoured soul. I have so many childhood memories of walking up the hill to spend my quarters on hockey cards at West End. Philip and Gert always made my visits memorable.

So sorry to hear of Aunt Gert’s passing . Aunt Gert always had a smile on her face and a story for you . She along with Uncle Phillip owned and ran West end Grocery where I spent a lot of time after school days . My mom worked there with her brother Uncle Phillip . I remember the customers always laughing before they left from some story or statement that was made. Good memories from loving , kindhearted , generous people. Gert you will be missed . <3
