Blackbird; Ernest “Ernie” Roy

Blackbird, Ernest “Ernie” Roy, 84, of Voglers Cove, passed away on Friday, March 23rd, 2012, in the Harbour Veiw Haven, Home for Special Care, Lunenburg.

 Born in Port Alfred, Quebec, he was the son of the late Roy and Eileen (Arsenault) Blackbird.

 Ernie was employed as a paper maker for over 40 years at the Bowater Mersey Paper Company, retiring in 1987. During his time there he was very active in the Paperworkers Union, serving as an officer for many years . He was a former member of the Mersey Bowater Band. The only thing that could surpass Ernie’s love of the outdoors was the love he had for his beloved animals.

 He is survived by daughters Laurie (Chris) Meadows, of Stellarton, Janet (Carl)Whynot, of Bridgewater; son Stephen (Carole), of Kentville.; grandchildren Raegan Meadows (Todd Osmond), of Petawawa, Ontario, Devin (Jayme) Meadows, of Lower Sackville, Tasha (Adam) Haverstock, of West Porters Lake, Kari (Jeremy) Wagner, of Bridgewater, Shawn (Michelle) Blackbird, of Hantsport, Andrew (Melanie) Blackbird, of Halifax; great grandchildren Kaelyn, Liam, Hunter, Stella, Drew, Jay.

 He was predeceased by a sister Evelyn.

 Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers Funeral Home, Liverpool. There will be no Funeral Service as of Ernie’s request. Rodger; Robert “Scottie”

Rodger, Robert “Scottie”, 80, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in Largs Ayrshire, Scotland, he was a son of the late George and Mary (Fraser) Rodger.

Scottie was Veteran of the Korean War, having served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, where his main job was running the boilers on the ship. Retiring from the Navy in 1975, he moved to Liverpool to become the maintenance man for the local school district, working there for several years before finally going to work at the Queens Manor, Liverpool, also in the maintenance department. He was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Liverpool, the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association and he was the current president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #38, Liverpool. Scotty recently received  a Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding service to the Royal Canadian Legion and to the community. During his many years with the Legion Scottie enjoyed going to the local schools to talk to the children about the importance of Remembrance Day Activities. Over the years Scottie was very active volunteering in the Liverpool Minor Hockey Association and he also spent many seasons as the manager for the old Liverpool Schooners Fastball Team. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife Margaret; daughter Heather (Terry) Scotland, of East Preston; sons Graham (Barb), of Edmonton, Robert, of Dartmouth; stepdaughter Bernadette (Mervin) Hartlen, of Milton; stepsons Kevin (Tina) Whynott, Lee (Jane Ann) Whynot, both of Liverpool; grandchildren, Colin, Corey, Craig, Carrie, Trish, Cody, Robbie, Ryan, Eli, Jillian, Stephanie, Amanda, Ashley, Amber, Rachael, Ashley, Kale, Darcy; great-grandchildren Kashton, Lily, Makayla, Kalia, Joshua, MacKenzie, Maddison, Ellie, Ruthie, Sam, Tess, Trey, Isaac, Alexia; his 1st wife Unamarie Rodger; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother George.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 26th, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:00 p.m., both from Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday March 27th, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., from St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Liverpool. Father Brian Murphy officiating. Roy; Ashley Edward

Roy, Ashley Edward , 37, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012, at home.

Born in Liverpool, he was a son of Rosemary Wamboldt, of Kingston, Nova scotia and the late Edward Roy.

Ashley will always be remembered for his affectionate smile. He loved to go fishing and hunting.

He is survived by a sister Tammy (David) LeBlanc, of Liverpool; brother Tony (Amber) Roy, of Brooklyn; niece Alexis Roy, of Brooklyn.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, April 17th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Liverpool Fire Hall. Broome; Elsie Edith

BROOME – Elsie Edith, 96, of Surf Lodge, Lockeport, formerly of Hunt’s Point, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Surf Lodge on Tuesday, March 20th, 2012.

 Born in East Chester, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Jessie Stevens.

 Elsie enjoyed camping, working in her garden and visiting relatives.

 She is survived by her sons Cecil (Lillian) of Hunt’s Point and Murray (Carolyn Douglas) of Pleasantville. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sisters, Ola Payzant of Port Mouton, Marion Cleveland of Conquerall Bank, Flora Huskins of Liverpool.

 She was predeceased by her husband Avery, son Vernon, infant daughter June and brothers Owen and Albert.

 Visitation will be Saturday, March 24th, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. and funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. both in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Toplis; Irene Christopher

TOPLIS – Irene Christopher,  92, of Milton, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool on Monday, March 19th, 2012.

           Born in Grand Prairie, AB, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Winnifred (Christopher) Freeman.

Irene graduated from Normal College in 1939 and taught school for over 40 years until her retirement in 1980. She was a life member of Milton Baptist Church and a founding member of the Queens Quilters. She was a member of the Gorham Chapter of the I.O.D.E. and past member of Arbutus Chapter # 30 Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her son John (Elsa) of Milton and grandchildren, Kevin and Joanne (Terry), as well as step-grandchildren Shawn (Heather) and Krista (David); step-great-granddaughter Gracie Baker and a nephew Murray Freeman of Blockhouse.

She was predeceased by her husband John, infant sister Ruth and her brother William.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 from 7 until 9 p.m. in Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service will be Friday, March 23rd, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Milton Baptist Church. Ingram; Charles Philip

INGRAM – Charles Philip,  75, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012.

                  Born in Liverpool, he was a son of the late John and Elsie (Whynot) Ingram.

Charlie was  owner and operator of Charles P. Ingram Construction Limited for over 50 years.  He loved his daily drives checking on his woodlands and enjoyed working with heavy equipment such as his excavator down in the “Pit”. He loved to bowl and enjoyed hunting and his “Newfoundland” music. He enjoyed working with his horses and had an entry in the Queens County Fair every year. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Truckers Association and the Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia. He will be remembered as a wonderful, loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Rosemary (Whynot); daughters Kathryn (Tony) Dagley of Milton, Elizabeth (Michael) Best of Western Head, Shelly (William) Vienneau of Port Mouton. Sons: Philip (Yvonne) and Stephen (Linda), both of Liverpool. Grandsons: James, Matthew, Tyler, Colby and Jake. Grand daughters: Amy, Katie, Lindsay, Jessie and Tamikka. Sisters: Geraldine (Lawrence) Ernst of Halifax and Elva (Michael) Smith of Hunt’s Point. Brothers: Eugene (Ethel) and Douglas (Diane), both of Liverpool. Wayne and Jeffery (Erin) , both of Mersey Point.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 17th, 2012 from 7 until 9 p.m. in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Ledvina; Diane Marie

Ledvina – Diane Marie, 62 , of Western Head, Queens County, passed away peacefully Monday, March 12th, 2012 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool N.S. after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Salamanca, New York , she was the daughter of Lucille (Riley) Carley and the late Joseph A. Carley

After graduating from Cornell University with a BS degree in Animal Science, she spent six months working as a lab technician in Alaska. Upon returning to the Ithaca area, she met and married her husband Tim. Diane was a records specialist for Dairy One in Ithaca, NY for over thirty years. She was president of the local Farm Bureau chapter and secretary treasurer of the Holstein Club. She had a life long love of animals having raised horses, cows, miniature donkeys, as well keeping numerous dogs and cats.

In fall, 2005 Diane moved to Liverpool to begin a love affair with the area and its people, as well as overseeing the construction of their retirement home while Tim continued to work.  She made many lasting friends and embraced the Liverpool community.  She did volunteer work for the Queens General Hospital, the Queens Food Bank and Thomas Raddall Library up until her illness. She travelled back to the States until she became a permanent resident and then for medical treatment in Buffalo, NY.  She always felt at peace when she returned to Liverpool as this is where her heart was.

She is survived by her husband Tim, mother Lucille of Salamanca, N.Y., sisters Joanne (James) Shernesky, Auburn, N.Y., Carol (Ned) Armstrong of Falconer, N.Y., Cathy Kuhaneck of Little Valley, N.Y. and brother David (Peggy) of Penfield, N.Y.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool where visitation will be Thursday, March 15th, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m.. Huphman / Williams, Marjorie Rosetta, 40, of White Point, Queens County, passed away on Tuesday, February 28th, 2012, in the Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, surrounded by her loving family.

 Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of Alverton Huphman, of South West Port Mouton and the late Beulah (Fisher) Huphman.

 Marjorie worked for many years at the Bluewave Fish Plant in Port Mouton. She enjoyed knitting dish cloths, chatting with her friends on the phone, playing Kingo and scratch tickets. She had a special place in her heart for her cat Paws.

 She is survived by her loving husband Richard; sisters Angelina Huphman, of Shelburne, Josephine Guest, of Liverpool; brothers Phillip (Margaret), of South West Port Mouton, Harold (Loretta), of Liverpool, Donald (Donna), of Port Mouton, Willis (Corina), of Liverpool, George (Joyce), of South West Port Mouton; aunt Rhoda (Frank) Roy, of South West Port Mouton; many nieces and nephews.

 Visitation will be held Thursday, March 1st, 2012, from 7-9 p.m., and a Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 2nd, 2012, at 2:30 p.m., both from Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Knox; James Robertson “Scotty”

KNOX—James Robertson “Scotty”,  80, of  Port Mouton, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012.

Born in Tranent, Scotland on May 2nd, 1931, he was a son of the late Robert and Janet Hunter (Black) Knox.

Scotty was  a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the Royal Canadian Navy aboard the “Haida”. Following his war service, he was owner and operator of his own fishing vessels the “Beverley Doreen” and the “Flying Scot” and a tour boat  called the “Ralphie J” He served as captain aboard the “Jennifer Jean” crab fishing for Clearwater Fisheries. He served as an officer aboard ship for Bedford Institute of Oceanography and captain aboard tugs with Eastern Canada Towing working in Halifax Harbour and out of Port Hawkesbury. He served as a trustee for the Port Mouton United Baptist Church and enjoyed working with masonry and stonework. He was an accomplished accordion player and loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed cooking and was “famous” for his stew nights. He also loved his Lord and loved to preach about it.

Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years Carol (Harrison); and his other “bonnie wee lasses” daughters Rhonda (Rob) Dunn of Moncton, NB; Cheryl (Bill) Bouges of Dartmouth; his granddaughters: Christa  (Andrew) Black, Sarah  Bouges (Graham Surrette) and Brittany (Brian) Lesser.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool where visitation will be Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 from 7 until 9 p.m. and funeral service will be Sunday, March 4th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from Port Mouton United Baptist Church. Reverend Perley Tidd officiating assisted by Mark  Holden. Burial will be in Peaceful Hill Cemetery, Port Mouton. Family flowers only. Cameron; Marion Winnifred

Cameron, Marion W., 97, formerly of Liverpool, passed away peacefully at Ocean View Continuing Care Center, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, on February 23rd, 2012.

Born in Bridgewater, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Winnie Dodge.

Prior to her marriage to Milledge Cameron in 1948, she worked in various retail stores and as a telephone operator in Bridgewater. After moving to Liverpool, she was involved in a number of organizations at trinity Anglican church. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf.

She is survived by her only son Andrew (Sandra), of Dartmouth and grandchildren Blair, of Inverness, Nova Scotia and Kristen (Philip) Guay, of Rockland, Ontario; great grandson Ethan Guay; sisters in law Barbara Dodge, Bathurst, New Brunswick, Vera Morgan, of Digby and thirteen nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Milledge in November 2009 and brothers Ronald, Paul and Herbert.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.  in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Chaplain Donald Lawton officiating.  No flowers by request.
