Condolence from Paul Lloyd on December 8th, 2016 8:05 pm

Condolences to Hazel , Ricky and the boys. Gene was always ready to play a tune , tell a joke or have a chat. I was trying one time to add up all the different fiddles tunes he could play – I’m sure the number is well over 300. A great guy to learn from, his timing always so perfect. I don’t think anyone could play Ragtime Annie or St Anne’s Reel (and many others) any better than he could.
Hope he takes that old Steiner with him and finds Dave and Denny where he’s goin’ …..

Condolence from Robert Ross and Mary Ediger on December 9th, 2016 8:52 am

Hazel, Ricky and family – Mary and I were saddened to hear of Gene’s passing. Watching the video of pictures brought tears to our eyes. I remember that Gene was the first person I met when we moved to Carters Beach Road over 10 years ago. While walking to the beach for the first time, Gene was outside in the yard and I stopped to chat. I was impressed with how friendly, modest and how much of a gentle soul he was – I walked away saying wow if this is the type of quality of individual that lives in Port Mouton, how lucky we are to have such solid neighbours.
From that point on, I viewed Gene as the patriarch of Carters Beach Road….so much knowledge of the sea and of the area in general.
Mary and I will miss seeing Gene but know that he lives on in the way that Ricky carries himself.
God bless all of you during this tough time but know that others care.

Condolence from Howard & Chalotte Callahan on December 9th, 2016 2:57 pm

To the Family,
I was a ‘guy from away’ who for years came to Port Mouton. I always admired the fishermen.
My first vivid memory of Gene was when he used to wave me over to his boat to give me a bucket of herring. Beyond his generous nature, his demeanor and his ever present smile gave me the confidence I needed as a novice hand-liner.
We’ll never forget his fiddling both at Teddy’s fish house and the community hall,
Gene was a consummate gentleman. I wish he knew what a special influence he had on me. His presence will be greatly missed. Condolences to the family.

Condolence from LaDonna Williams on December 10th, 2016 12:44 am

Hazel, Ricky, Maryanne and boys,
I was so saddened to hear of Gene’s passing. He was always one of my favorite people. I will forever be grateful for being able to enjoy his love of music and family. My fondest memories are of him and the rest of the boys playing music while camping, at Dave’s, Junior’s basement, the hall (Cranberry), my 39th Birthday and of course, at Gene’s and Hazel’s. To me he was larger than life and someone you think will always be here. Gentle, kind, loving and talented is how I will remember him. < Please know that he has touched so many lives and he will always be remembered. I hope he is reeling a tune with his many friends who have gone before him. I know Mom and Dad were probably among the first to stand in line to hear his sweet music.

LaDonna
